Am I missing something

From reading the specs and speculation, people are saying that the 0-60 time will come in around 4.8 seconds.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that what the previous generation did?

Other than a different sound and probably worse mileage, what does 90 additional bhp and two extra cylinders get me?

One would think that the new one should be a whole lot faster off of the line.

4.8 is the quoted e92 time, which is conservative.
BMW quoted the e46 at 5.2 for reference.(even tho drivers achieved 4.8)

Therefore, we can expect the e92 will do much better than 4.8...

e46: 5.2 >>> 4.8
e92: 4.8 >>> ???

And the quoted 5.2 is 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h). Depending on gearing, there could be a 2-3 shift in there, as well.

I figured anyone who owned an e46 m3 would know better...

Theres only about a thousand reasons why it would be impossible that bmw releases a new M3 that does not outperform a 7 yr old e46...

100lb lighter + 100 more hp + LSD

Gotcha. I am a loyalist...until there is something better. I've enjoyed my 5/01 Coupe for going on six years now. So far I think the E92 will be better for my purposes/wants/needs. There is not doubt it will outperform the E46 in most regards, though a fuel economy comparison is still not quite clear. The looks are still growing on me, and I'm a little disappointed in what I know about colors/interior choices so far.

I'm a loyalist, but I'm moving on early next year (deposit 10/05 at Rasmussen, Portland) to a new loyalty, I hope.

Mine has been very reliable overall. Nothing much in the last couple years, except a cam sensor (warranty), and slight sunroof rattle (repaired). That's why I'm not too worried about getting an early production E92, though I'd have to know more about the DCT tranny before I decide which way to go. '03.5s are desireable because of the 6/100 engine warranty and they have LED tails, but any one is good, depending on your budget.

You can find a similar discussion in another thread. The 0-60 on the old m3 is 4.8s from car and driver but that is the best time after 10-20 attempts. The 4.8s figure recently released on the new m3 is 0-100km/h which translate to 0-62mph. There is a 2 mph disprency between the two. Also, the original manufacturer 0-62mph on e46m3 is 5.2s.

The comparable figure for the M3 CSL as quoted by BMW in their press release at the time was 4.9s for 0-62 mph. The M3 CSL was in fact tested at between 4.6 - 4.8s for the 0-62mph sprint. So you would expect the new M3 to be around a similar level, which means 4.4 - 4.5 secs from 0-60 mph.

But let's be honest, who cares about 0-60mph, we'll learn a lot more from the 1/4 mile, 0-200km/h times.

Ok, we are still waiting for the "facts" but from following the discussion of what we know at this point I am beginning to wonder what the difference is between my E46 M3 and the E92 M3 (which I have pre-ordered). Sure, there WILL be improvements but how much and where it will be is beginning to haunt me when it comes to selling my M3 and paying the difference for the E92. If the E92 is, let's say 1 second faster, how much of a noticeable difference this going to make on the track (probably almost zero on the street)? I think only a little, and this is if you are able (have the "for real" skills) to drive near the car's limits. Will the handling be hugely improved or slightly improved? Note that do a few track courses a year and the rest is around town and maybe a road trip or two a year (so I'm not at a driving level as many on this site are).

If I subtract the approximate selling price of my E46 from the estimated price of the new E92 I am thinking I'm left with a LOT of cash to add a lot of mods and still have about 1/2 of that cash left over. Ok, I'm leaving the thrill of having the new M3 etc. out of the equation here.

Maybe I'm just picking up on the disappointment emphasis on some of the posting, but any comments on putting some mods into an E46 vs. the extra cash into the E92?
