Future Tech: BMW Remote Controlled Parking In Action

We recently posted a summary (here) of the upcoming BMW technologies. One of the first driver assistance systems which we will see in the near future is BMW's Remote Controlled Parking technology. All the driver will need to do is park the BMW in front of the garage and the vehicle will then maneuver itself into the garage – and out again – all by pressing a button on the keyfob.

The remote controlled parking technology has already been fitted onto certain test cars. Seen here is a F10 5-series demonstrating this future feature. The barriers represent the garage walls into which the F10 has driven itself into safely, without a driver in the vehicle.

Great technology, but doesn't really make sense. So I'm in front of my garage, press the garage remote, get out of the car, press the parking remote, car parks itself as opposed to drive in front of my garage, press the garage remote, move forward, brake, get out of car.

The former approach just seems to be more of a hassle than of benefit.

Some people have really tight garages either because of its small size or lots of things stored in the garage. Makes it tough to get in and out of the car. This technology could be helpful in those situations.

This is a useless feature, IMO. Why even bother driving at all, if you feel the need to use this function?

Might not be useful in North America where we all have nice sized garages, but maybe in Europe if you have to park in lets say an ally beside your house and there is no room to open the door once parked, it would be great.

don't be so close minded. this feature may be more relevant in europe where parking is tighter and space at a premium. i know a few friends of mine here in the US with "2-car" garages that are barely big enough for both their 1er and 3er... older demographics likely find it annoying to have to ever-so-carefully open their door such that it doesn't ding their other car and crawl up and out of the seat. that takes alot of energy and care. i bet even those who don't realize the benefit will quickly be spoiled by such a feature. if your garage is big already, perhaps you'd be able to park your cars closer together or to the wall, and leave more space for trash cans, refrigerator doors, bicycles etc. i'm sure the technology is cheap enough at this point that the real question isn't "why," but why not?

....ha ha I can just hear the call to BMW assist.... "Hallo, yes...I used my park assist to place my car in a tight alley and I cant get the car out and i have no sunroof.... and I'm late for cribbage.."

i'd love this for my mom, so when she gets home she doesnt have to squeeze out of her car and bang up my car with her doors

Great! Now I can stand outside in the rain while my car parks itself, instead of staying nice and dry inside the car.

IMO if you're not able to safely navigate a vehicle into the garage, you're not qualified to be driving in the first place.

Here's a picture that I snapped in Tokyo a few years ago:

Many of the city's garages are about this size. This tech would be useful in places like Japan.

ditto, step outside the US and you would be surprised what people call parking spaces. shit, people in my neighborhood use their garages as storage rather than for their car because of how tight space is.

Naturally, being an attorney, my first thought is whose fault is it when the car gets banged up when the machine inadvertent collides with something---like a dog or child. Sure, there can be a kill-switch, but things fail.

Self/assisted parking is one thing, but this technology----you're not even in the car!

does the car only go forward? I guess the video would have shown if the car was able to back up from the space as well...
