Piquet Jr. came up with the idea. Went to Pat Symonds and then presented the idea to Briatore - all because his contract was in jeopardy with Renault and wanted to seem like a team player...

While it doesn't surprise me in the least that Flavio agreed to it, I was SHOCKED that Pat Symonds was involved and agreed to it. If I was a betting girl, I'd bet that Witness X was Bob Bell, their Technical Director at the time (and still with the team).

Interesting about Alan Permane - hadn't heard that - guess I would have lost that bet, lol!!!

What brought me to the Forums - I've been lurking for a long time, but I just ordered my first BMW - a 2011 328xit (bluewater/oyster - 6MT, ZVP, ZPP, ZSP, xenon, HK, heated wheel, roof rails). It just finished production and I can't wait for it to get here!

I currently have an '05 MINI Cooper S that is about to turn 100,000 miles - love it but have outgrown it space wise (4 dogs).

I know Bob Bell and I would be very surprised that he was involved in this.

Concerning Pat Symonds, he his a real motorsport guy and maybe he was aware about this. I don't think it was his idea but it's possible that he has been convince to manage it by Flavio. Flavio had an huge influence capacity level, people can judge Pat but I don't know a lot of body that would resist to him when they are subordinated.
