Cold Start Engine Knock / Rattle
Hi -
I have a 2007 E92 M3 with about 38000 miles. When starting the engine from cold there is a loud noise like a mechanical knocking or rattling which goes away within a couple of seconds. This has developed over the last 2000 miles. Has anyone else experienced this? Am pretty certain its the lifters. The lifters will sound very rattly once you start the car and disappears within minutes once there is enough oil lubrication to the lifters. Would not worry unless the sound remains there...

I hope its not the famous engine clicking arround 1,000-1,500rpm... There is an old, extensive thread which was recently re-vamped and describes this in exstenso. Hopefully its NOT it. Please keep us posted

Seriously though, the E92 was released in 2007 in Europe. This crops up a lot. So take my word, I own one. |

There were some E9x M3 that were built in late 2007, but sold as 2008 models.

I live in Germany...... If you want to believe it is a 2007..... cool. But read the following and see if you still believe. "The fourth generation BMW M3 was announced on the 2007 Geneva Auto Show (Switzerland, March 6-18th, 2007) with the BMW M3 concept. As was the case with the E46 M3 Concept and E60 M5 Concept, the M3 Concept hid almost nothing of the looks of the production version, that had its world premiere on the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show IAA (Germany, September 13 to 23rd). It was originally set to be called M4 along with 3 Series coupes and convertibles which were to become the 4 Series, but due to the interest in retaining the M3 bloodline, this was scrapped and the lineup continued as it is." Production in Sept of 2007 is a 2008 model. Mine was built in April of 2010 and it is a 2011 model.... trackin???

And unlike the US, where car makers can sell a car in March of 2010 and designate it MY2011, model years in the UK are based on when the car is registered. So it could be a UK '07 car...

I understand, to BMW it is a 2008. And I'm not arguing with you but according to folks in the UK, it is a 2007. And if the OP were to sell the car some day, he will have to represent it as MY 2007.

That makes no sense. As it technically did not exist as a MY 2007. Not trying to be argumentative here, I have a small brain and this is confusing me. lol

![]() I remember having this same discussion over on the E60 board. On some levels it makes sense. You have to put your government buearocrat hat on, but if the car is sold in 2007, it is a 2007. If it's sold in 2008, it's a 2008. The marketing folks at the car makers don't work or think that way. And frankly, not many other countries do it as literal as the Brits.

Oh, and I am British and when I describe the car as 2007 I mean registered in 2007 (September). |

are you certain it isn't the valves in the exhaust making the noise?

So if you purchased an unregistered new never sold 2008 model year car (like a leftover) and registered it in 2010, the UK would consider it a 2010?

Poor guy is asking for help and you have to argue about production year? The lack of couth and integrity is at an all time low around here. OP take it in for a diagnosis, sounds like a valve train symptom. Good luck
