New details about E92 M3 - March 9th

This sounds legit so I thought it was worth its own thread:

Indeed that sounds exactly like BMW. 265 rear width is not enough for 420+ hp at all, esp with RWD. Why does BMW do this??? Are they too cheap? I can't figure out the reason. This beast could handle 295/305 easily on the rear.

Also, 19s should be std but I think $ is the simple reason they wont be. If they were, 20s would be the only upgrade option and that is probably just a bit too much for an OEM. Hence we get 18s std, ugh.

BTW: I think the OP list is bogus, just my opinion.

There's no way the rears have an aspect ratio of 40. That would give them a noticeably smaller sidewall thickness and rolling circumfrance than the fronts. So that can't be correct. Doesn't mean the list is totally bogus but its a little suspect.

At those sizes the rear would be taller, not the opposite as quoted above.

I think the listed numbers are false, as every new car BMW has released has been 10mm wider front and rear. Old M5 245/275 new M5 255/285. Same thing going on with new 3s and old 3s. its been 10mm for the past few new cars...

I'm sure you will be able to get 285s in there. BMW is typically conservative on sizes.

Yeah. I've got 255 rears on my 330i. I wish BMW had fitted 285 rears to the M3. If they had done so, aftermarket you'd probably be able to squeeze in 305.

If I recall, in a parking lot sometime back I saw 305's fitted on a 6 series. Can that be done or am I dreaming and it was a different car?

The choice of narrower tire than you can actually get on there has to do with straight-line stability (a wider tire wants to follow camber changes in the road more than a narrower one), unsprung weight (wider tire + wider wheel = more rolling mass = the worst kind), replacement cost, etc.

Most buyers of M3s will never even bring the stock tires to the limits of adhesion, thus the extra width would only be a hindrance. If you go wider in the back to gain straight-line traction you have to go wider in the front, which drastically affects steering feel, weight, etc.

So they wind up (as with everything else on a performance street car) having to compromise. I think 245F, 265R is a good compromise.

The E46 M3 came with 225/45/18 front and 255/40/18 rear, but guys can fit 255/40/18 front and 285/35/18 rear with no fender mods at all. It all depends on what you want.

I am glad they will have 18" standard because it will keep the weight down more (-2-5 lbs per corner). The fenders will leave plenty of room for anyone to "Bling It Out" with 20" rims wearing 265F, 295R. Hell, you can even get some spinners if you want!

I have a customer running 305/25R20 on the back of his 545. Its a tight squeeze, but they fit.

I learn something all the time here. Don't you think that 285/265 f/r would be a good compromise between traction and steering feel on this car? Yeah spinners on your E92 M3

IMO never change the original BMW settings, it maybe has a better look if you do, but at the end it is a worse drive.................................

If the car would have been a better drive with bigger tyres, than BMW would have placed them allready.....................................
