I don't think it matters which dealer as each dealer and each car has unique costs. I've had dealers tell me "they don't make margins at $46k", so either they're flat out lying, or my theory is right.

For instance, if dealer got the M3 on a trade in, then he may be able to sell it slightly cheaper than if he got it at an auction b/c he's made profit on the new car sale, but only if they see and net both transactions out together. If the dealer books and views the used car sale and new car sale seperately, then he may want more for the used car since he's true reserve is the projected auction price to make his margin.

Good luck, I notice you're in DC area, there's a entry level sedan version in Columbia, MD right now. I tried to get him to bite at $41k (wishful thinking, I know), but I can't be that far off his cost considering I got a fully loaded one with half the miles of his for 46k.

Also, I was lucky enough to buy mine at a BMW dealership. So I didn't have to pay extra for the inspection, and they are required to perform an inspection before it leaves. They were also able to set everything up for me such as name transfers for warranty and BMW assist (I guess I trust the checks and balances to prevent conflicts of interest in my case)

if you had bought a m3 or rather any car in general during jan-march (the height of the financial meltdown) of 2009, the sales price is basically the same as it is today (couldve basically drove it for a yr without depreciating).

depending on your geography, 2008 car is roughly high 40K. i.e. southern ca is a hot market, a 2008 AW/FOX Red 6mt, 17,000miles fully loaded sold for 48K at the manheim auction. this is auction too. only color combo i've see in months.

Bought 6-19-10

2009 E92 Space Gray
793 miles
6 MT, Premium Pkg, CF Roof, HD Radio, Sat Radio, Extended Leather, 19 inch wheels, Nav, CPO Certified even though it only had 793 miles, Tinted windows

Paid $54,400

I thought was a good deal, new would have been $69k & change and a shorter warranty

I assume you're talking about E90s..
You should offer mid-high 40s and see if there's a taker. 20ks is a lot of miles though.

Nice deal - was yours a dealer demo or had it been registered to another buyer first?

that's what I did. Hard to come by and honestly for the extra bucks you get new and to your own specs.

wow, this is a good deal. It was basically what I was looking for in price. Did you trade a car in?

I think we should add whether a trade and also whether it was cash/finance was part of the txn, otherwise, it'll distort the final pricing of the car. For instance if he financed and traded in a car, he could have paid comparable to $46-47k for the car.

I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. I was turning in my first Bimmer, e90 335i, and the M3 was coming in on trade for a Hybrid Tahoe. The dealer carries multiple auto lines.

Since then I've needed to get new tires so roll in another $1.5k for some PS2s. Overall I have been happy with the purchase and look forward to driving the M every day that I can.

OK, great story here. I saw a listing on Craigslist for a 'new' M3 for sale by owner with 600 miles on it. I called to find out the story, and turns out the guy had bought the car over the weekend when his wife was gone and when she returned Monday, she said HELL NO!!!!! He waited a week and she said HELL NO twice as loudly, so he decided he had to sell and quickly to save the marriage. He had financed through BMW, so selling the car was tricky. He had no title yet, no plates yet, and only his original bill of sale to prove he really owned it! That scared away another other buyers, and left me as his only hope. I did my due diligence with BMW finance and decided to go for it. I paid BMW directly to pay off the loan amount of $63K. Did a bill of sales committing him to sign the car over to me once the clear title came back to him (BMW will only send title to original owner, not anyone else). He kept the car during this time until the clear title came back. I was a bit nervous for a a week, but when the clear title finally arrived, he signed it over and it was mine. It had under 800 miles when I got it. He owned it for a total of 4 weeks.

Compared to buying a brand new 2010 model at 500 over invoice (the deal my dealership offered me), I save about $5K. A good deal, but there were 2 draw backs:

1) it is now a 2 owner car
2) It took some time and nerve to do this deal. $63K is a lot to gamble with when the guy could have somehow been scamming me. I did a LOT of due diligence to make sure I was OK. Going with a dealer would have been a lot easier.

But I think it was worth the $5K savings.

However, the guy was a REALLY nice guy and I hated seeing him lose over $12K for a car he owned only 4 weeks. (He took $6K less than he paid, and lost another $6K on taxes in CA). That was a tough lesson for him.

Holy cow!! Great price! But MSRP actually seems low. You seem to have every possible option (like mine) and my 2010 was about $77K MSRP.

edit: doh! just noticed yours is e90. Are they that much cheaper??

the E92 is i think about 1,500-2k more? I forget, but the only thing i didn't get was leather seats or extended leather. I basically got 1/2 the ZPP. I also didn't get ZCP, rear side shades or the auto rear shade. That's it. Otherwise it's loaded. oh and it's MSRP is 72k. $17k in options

I attached my configuration

I would've taken the car with me and made him sign a bill of sale AND an affidivate spelling out the exact terms and just wait for the title to arrive.
