There's one thing Audi doesn't have in it's current generation though... a 5 door hatchback... the 5 door A(S)(RS) 3 looks like a wagon, not a hatchback...

It looks like a wagon, but it's the size of a hatchback. There aint no way you're gettin no sheet of plywood in the back of an A3.

I might have gotten one of these if they we're available in the US and cost significantly less than an M3, but if both the RS3 and M1 ever make it to showrooms in the US (I'm not holding my breath) they may price simiarly enough to be an interesting comarison. When I crossed shopped the A3 and 1 it would have been a tough call between a 128i and an A3 3.2. I would expect the RS3 to be similarly comparable to a 135i with the performance upgrade kit, but the anticipated M1 will likely be lighter and more powerful. Both cars would target slightly different audiences anyway. Those who want more practicality versus driving thrills.

The weight and power of the M1 will probably sit in a very narrow band, i.e. approx 1500kg and 350hp. Both of which would be slightly better than what I believe an RS3 would have but regardless on these facts, the two car would be fighting for similar customers.

PS: Due to better chassis, I think the M1 will be faster than RS3. Performance-wise the TT-RS is the better rival, it will be closer or better than M1.

On pure performance terms the M1 will indeed be better than the RS3, well that opinion would of course be based on the current model. But because of it's increased practicality (5seats and 4dr+hatch) and it's all weather performance the RS3 could well be the more appealing to own overall.

On a personal note I question the why Audi would bring an RS3 this close to the end of the model, I reckon waiting until 2013 would be wiser, new platform, better dynamics and more up to date electronics and equipment.

Likewise I question the reason for bringing the M1 this late into the production cycle of the 1 series.

Exactly and we know which car will be the driver's car - the one you choose with your gut.

I think it is for giving a name. For example, the next 1 Series M with I4 TT will not be anything new, as we will have had one with I6 TT.

Bringing the RS3 in 2013 wouldn't matter. Still based on the Golf, still trying to polish a performance turd.
