Right, so I am active duty military, my state of residence is VA, and my county of residence is FFX County.

So I have to pay property tax for my car.

You must be military where your home is out of state then, as such you claim not having to pay taxes. Otherwise if you are a VA resident taxes apply.

it should be ez enough to change your home of record, does your parents have any other state you can claim?
If you are active... you can pretty much get away with alot of things. I was even exempt from DMV car sales taxes when I registered my car while I was stationed in Md.
I had to get the tax-exempt from from NJ (my home of records) to show MD DMV

ase2dais,

It's all good. My affairs are in order, and i know what taxes i owe and don't.

Day Laborer said he paid ZERO property taxes. He is active duty military, but i think hes a VA resident. So i'm not sure how he is getting away w/ that. Not accusing him of anything, just curious if there was another clause i wasn't aware of. but no, there isn't.

Unless i'm mistaken and he is from out of state/car registered out of state, but stationed here in VA / Ft Belvoir.

There are two primary factors in determining exemption from the requirements to pay annual car taxes:
1. You have a legal permanent residence (domicile) elsewhere, and
2. The vehicle is registered in the name of the active duty person and/or their spouse. Under the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act, motor vehicles and other tangible personal property owned by a spouse of a servicemember will be subject to the same tax treatment accorded to servicemembers whether the property is owned or titled in the name of the servicemember, spouse, or both names jointly.

I believe you may still qualify to be exempt from paying property taxes.
read the bold print.

If you meet one or both of these criterias, you should be exempt.
Too bad they may not refund you for taxes you've already paid.

But... if your home of record was Fairfax county- prior to joining the military.. then you pay taxes

in a nutshell here it is for simple explanation:

Your place of abode does NOT definitely mean its your home of records or legal permanent residence.
a·bode is a place in which a person resides; residence; dwelling; habitation; home, an extended stay in a place. Not because of your doing but because of your Military Orders and duties

Your (legal permanent residence) Home of Records IS a place where you originally lived before you joined the military, or plan to go back to after you separate and/or a place you vote or pay year end taxes, if they have any for absent legal resident.

anymore deeper explanation pls consult your attorney or tax consultant

Yep, it is complete BS. But I am sure your car insurance bill makes up for the fact that you don't have PP tax in Jersey!
