Which one is the "new" one? I'm assuming the one on the left with the higher part number? And are there any performance differences?

So it's just like the one in my 2010 M3. I also received the old one on the right with my car at delivery. Actually they both came in the same exact bags. The 812 bag also had the white paper in it. However, the cable that comes in the 812 bag is the old 796 cable.

So I guess even though BMW changed the cable part number (812), they are still putting the old cable (796) in the bag.

Thanks for clearing this up, but it still doesn't make sense that they are putting the old cable in a bag with the new part number on the label.

Put old and new one side to side. What's the difference? And what's the problem? I haven't used mine at all on my Jun/08 car, but would like to know if the different cable applies only to new iDrive ('09+) cars, or '08s as well. Thx.

Old one supposedly does not charge the iPhone 3gS

The cable may have updated firmware to support the 3GS.

No noticeable difference between the two cables physically at least. Waiting on my 2011 M3 to test.

I have the "796" cable and it charges my 3Gs just fine on my MY08. Maybe it doesn't work well with new CIC in '09+?

Mine works in my 08 also. It give me a message about going into airplane mode. I either ignore it or press no and it charges and everything else???
