What is to stop ANYONE from claiming that their accelerator "stuck" in a Toyota involved in an accident to avoid liability?

Obviously anybody that does get into an at-fault wreck in a Toyota is going to claim the car caused it. Thats the problem with these allegations being tossed out there left and right. Its just a big mess now...

The statement said information is captured about vehicle speed, the accelerator's angle, gear shift position, whether the seat belt was used and the angle of the driver's seat.

If you read that SAME ARTICLE it states that Toyota has only one single laptop in North America that can read the ECU data stored about the pedal position after a crash.

Same article also states Toyota has been unwilling to cooperate on releasing the ECU data after crashes despite subpoena. So anyone driving a Toyota involved in an accident has a pretty darn good chance of claiming unintended acceleration or stuck pedal and no one is really going to be able to prove it otherwise.

Yea, this whole thing has essentially shown that Toyota has known about major problems with their vehicles for years, causing hundreds deaths and many more injuries, and have kept all the info private and not done a thing to fix it. Toyota has also been found out to have withheld rollover info on many of their SUVs that have caused injuries and deaths. Now that they've been found out and the courts are demanding they give the info up, they're probably getting rid of as much of it as they can before complying.

Ya I know I was just saying that they can prove it. Do they? No because they will be at fault. It will be cheaper to just do a settlement than admit their car is faulty.

Where are you getting this "hundreds of deaths" number?? Only 19 deaths so far have been officially attributed to unintended acceleration and most of those were concluded to be stuck floor mats (including the investigation into the Santee crash in August). While there may be some electonic glitch that has caused a few instances, the chances of this happeneing to the average Toyota owner is lower than that of getting struck by lightning....

The government made up this entire crisis in order to boost the American car companies. The media needed a new story since the "financial crisis" headline was getting old, so they turned a few complaints into a fiasco. Toyotas are great cars.

I bet there are other cases of unintended acceleration from other (American?) car companies that aren't being highlighted or investigated. I wonder why?

I like having a mechanical linkage under my left foot to disengage the engine and transmission to stop any engine-motivated acceleration. It's called a clutch.
