Hypermiling sucks.....

I thought I'd see if I could hypermile in the M3 so I drove a whole tank (400km) driving like a nanna, not allowing the car to rev higher than 3000rpm and changing into the highest gear as quick as possible.

The result? 15.2 l/100km!!!!!!!!

Next tank. Normal driving. M-drive used wherever possible and reaching the speed limit as quick as possible.

The result? 14.1l/100km!!!!!!!

Can't work that one out.

Andre, that's what I've realised, the harder you drive, fuel efficient the car becomes. These days I drive it aggressively without worrying too much about the shift point and high gear.
The S54 in the E46 was just the opposite.

Thats wierd!! I've averaged around 12.3 - 12.5 litres per 100km since I've had my car and I've have taken it on some pretty good (hard) runs. The only thing I can put it down to is that I only live 5 mins drive from the highway and most of my driving is done at fatser speeds not city driving.

I do mostly city driving with a bit of freeway.....err however most of the freeway stuff is at peak hour crawl

My driving is "spirited" as I love the symphony that comes after 5500rpm from those four tailpipes.

The best I have ever done was a country run where I achieved 10.6L/100km.

Mine has almost done 10,000km now, driven mostly against the rush hour. At the moment the car computer says 13.2L/100km, and it was reset about 8,000 km ago.
I do spend about a third of the time with the M button activated on the hardest setting, the setting I use when I drive home from work.
Best mpg so far was 10.6L/100km...when I first reset the recording and was on highway for 200km. After some mixed city and highway driving it settled at 12.8 at first and now has slowly crept up to 13.2.
Worst was 16.7L/100km for one full tank of petrol, just so happened that I had to travel in rush hour traffic everyday for a week (well, that tank didn't last the week)

I'm looking forward to a track day in May with the M3. Last year I managed to get 26L/100km out of my 135i. I'm hoping to get to 30L/100km in the M3!!! I'd better take a few jerrycans of fuel on the day! However based on the "drive hard to save fuel" principle I may end up at 10L/100km - doubt it though....

As an old time m3poster who now sometimes takes a look at what is happening here, I'll contribute to this one as you may be interested in my experience in my 997, which is a MY09 .2 C2S so has the direct injection engine.

It’s a 6-speed but after I drove a PDK recently I noticed how it changed up very early compared with my normal technique but also how much better the mileage was, so I tried the same approach in my 997.2 C2S.

So rather than changing up at 3500-4000 rpm as I was doing I started changing up at 2000rpm and just using light throttle to avoid loading the engine unduly. And one thing I found straight away that the mileage improved dramatically. From 15 or so (in US mpg) to over 20 even around town – that’s around 15.7 l/100km to less than 12.

On the track I get around 24-26 l/100km and now often see 10-11 commuting to work and back.

Maybe it’s related to the DFI engine and I don’t claim any particular wisdom on the matter but I thought you may find it of interest.

You'll hit 30 easy. Down at the island Zender and I were averaging between 36 and 38L/100km. What good fun it was!!!!

I have noticed when I first bought the car that when cruising at around 3k rpm the mpg is actually better than when I'm cruising at 2k rpm.
Never bothered to check since then but I have no idea why its like that.
I guess it really is more efficient at 3krpm..

In my 540 my mileage improved by 3mph from my normal conservative street driving to "some" (when ever i would remember) hypermileing.

The key isn't driving like a granny. it's coasting. It's technically not allowed. But I would be going most places coasting in neutral. With the slight grade in my area, one of the directions I would coast at the speed limit for about 7 miles. at 800rpm, that gets you good mileage. also coasting once you reach the speed limit, and coasting from traffic light to light. the goal is to not have to use brakes. brakes use up momentum, and you'd only end up sitting there anyway. Also shutting the car down at large traffic lights.

point is, I'm back to driving 75 on the freeways, and having some fun in the turns/on-ramps

Screw MPG!! I love driving next to a Prius and then flying past them hahah lol...I was stuck at at a light once and there was a Prius behind me and I could those fvcking tree huggers wave their arms in disapproval pointing at my car and what not....GUNNED it out of there hahah I freaking hate Prius drivers!
