the SIB posted about the clunk noise is not the same as the diff noise. and that thread with the diff falling out is BS..that guy HAD to be doing something that he shouldnt have been as ive seen rear difs get hit by cinder blocks that didnt do that...

Diff noise resolution
I have a 08 E90 M3 and the dreaded diff clutch chatter started sometime after the 1200 miles service and was getting steadily worse. The dealer changed the diff lube over to the FM Boost version and the chatter was gone in about 100 miles. The dealer nor did I do any tight circles to try to acclerate remediation. IMO I would see if simply driving with FM Boost does the trick before trying to force it home with the tight circles. Seems like the tight circles might get the job done faster but add needless wear and tear.

This noise is common to a number of high-performance cars with LSD. As said above, it is because of the different speeds the rear wheels are turning during slow tight turns. The diff includes a "clutch pack" on each side to allow for the slippage necessary to accommodate the differing wheel speeds. The slippage in the clutch pack is the source of the noise.
It was pretty universal on all C6 Z06s, and GM's solution was exactly the same as BMW's--installing an additive, driving slowly in circles, etc.. As others also said above, it does no harm to ignore it and do absolutely nothing. It is normal, and all the additive does is to quiet a harmless noise.

Having read this thread before the noise started around 12K (a rubbing sound in a parking garage during very tight turns) I felt all was cool.
Now, at 18K the incidence / magnitude has increased e.g. I now hear (and sometimes feel) it when negotiating any tight radius turn, not just during an extremely tight slow turn in a parking garage. When I say "feel" I mean along with the rubbing noise I can sense a mild vibration in the drivetrain that is clearly related to the noise. Makes sense to me...but I have not read any posts that mention a vibration, just a noise. Is this a common experience for those who have "the noise." Thanks for the information. |

I just noticed this noise after having my car for almost two weeks.
We use a 5 level parking deck at work and rubbing noises occurs on level/flat areas while making the sharp turns slowly. I've been checking my rear tires for rubbing but then starting thinking about the DIFF because I drove really slow yesterday without the car leaning from the turn... still heard the noise! So that eliminates rubbing and I also just had a full alignment at BMW. Makes my skin crawl when I hear it! Glad I found this thread! Off to BMW I go for new fluid! |

My 08 Sedan starting doing this since the weather turned cold here in the North East.
The car has 25k miles and it does sound pretty crummy. While I don't want to disturb the limited slip capability, I also don't see why I should have to live with the noise when it never did it before... Guess I'll suggest that they do the updated fluid. Not planning on tracking the car in 2010 anyway. Will advise with progress on my experience with this.

Just remember to fill it with the car flat. I don't even have to lift the car, but you might have to lift it to break plugs loose and for the final tightening, as you won't have much leverage with your arms extended under there. When it's time to do it, I'll fill it with a hose extension over the rear right tire; much easier than lifting the whole car (without a lift, that is). Good luck. |

An allen socket then? Now that you mentioned it, my BMW bike used a 14mm allen socket for the tranny drain plug, so it very well could be hex indeed. I just quickly looked at the diff during the 1,200-mile service, and just remember seeing a small 'hole' for the plugs. Will take a closer look next time I raise the car. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm on dirty clothes from doing work on the yard, so let me finish, then slip under my car and I'll edit this post with the answer. Looks like 12 or 14mm to me.
I'm a nice guy and checked before continuing with the yard. Both are 14mm, just like the bikes. Cheapest way to get it was a 3-piece set (12, 14 and 17mm for $10) at Autozone. At least it was a few years back. And yes, if you're skinny you can slide under the car without lifting it . Hope this helps. Last edited by JCtx; 02-16-2010 at 07:14 PM.. |
