Just to add to what STALKER said. In the old days, brake pads would release gas when they got hot and in theory, that could form a layer of gas between the pad and the rotor, so cross drilled rotors were made.
With new pads, they don't "gas out" so there's technically no need for drilled rotors, though they may help in cooling the rotor.
The cracking is reduced if the holes are cast in place vs. actually drilled after the fact. Some companies will also champher the holes to help prevent cracking. I've heard tiny cracks are not a big deal, but not sure about that.
