Can CEL clear itself?

Is it possible for CEL to clear itself? I hadn't gotten a chance to check mine since it went off a second time, first time was from HFC"s, second time I'm not positive why, but guessed it was emissions related. but that was almost 200 miles ago and tonight it suddenly went away. Is it possible for an emissions CEL to clear itself?

i can answer from my 03 E39 M5 not this car but i would assume it is prob the same thing.

i had a SS straight pipe on my M5 and there was a tiny tiny leak due to the SS build on it, the first one i had didn't have it so i guess this one was built on fri lol. anyhow sometimes it would throw the CEL light on and after finding out what it was from ( O2 sensor) and getting it cleared when it would come on again i would just leave it and after awhile it would go away then sometimes come back etc.

so i think if it is something maybe sensor related or emmission related and not serious then it could go away like it did on my M5

Mine came on for "increased emissions" Monday after 600+ miles the EI x-pipe with HFC has been on. Has not cleared itself yet. I orderd an OBD II reader that will also clear the codes I hope but hope it's not going to be a continues reacuring issue. That'll get old quick.
