Makes sense. Though not tires, I recently found a bag of old (around 6 years) office depot rubber bands and most looked like they had darkened and had little elasticity to them. Most of them kept snapping.

Ahhh. Network news. That's where I go for informed explanations that are not all hyped full of sensationalism.

Bah I bought Yokohoma tires that are 2005 production.. My tires only last max 4-5 months since I use them hard. Think they're going to be ok for use this summer or should I throw them out? (Occasionally might bring them to the track as well)

Most motorcyclists know about that. I never buy tires older than a year for my bikes, but am a bit less anal on my cars. Anything less than 1-1/2 years is considered acceptable.
The other truth about tires is 'cycles'. The more a tire cycles hot and cold the rubber starts to deteriorate (harden), so a tire that is used on a ton of short trips is going to lose its 'stickiness' a lot sooner than one used for trips at the same mileage. Again, that's more critical on a motorcycle. And finally, HOW you store a tire has a lot more impact than time alone. A tire exposed to ozone (daylight, sun, next to an electric appliance, etc) is going to deteriorate quicker than one stored in a dark, dry place. Take care. |
