My rents had a 00 Mountaineer back in the day. I used to steal that car constantly. The car was great! Fast, fun, AWD, and a pretty decent factory sound system. The sub used could hit low real hard.

I remember putting cars in their place all the time off the line with that car . I vaguely remember a guy at the Merc dealership telling me dudes with change would buy Stang GT's and the Mountaineer and doing engine swaps cuz the Mountaineer made like 20-30 more hp because it was tuned differently or something. The dude could have been talking out his ass for all I know, never really looked into it.

Glad to see the 5.0 coming back though. Ford is doing some good stuff. I hope Chevy is taking notes.

Ive taken 00 Stangs off the line in my Merc. Mine even handles pretty well. It has a little known SVT H/O package. It adds stiffer bushings and a stiffer suspension, I honestly think that my 135i has more body roll than this truck. It also has a class III tow system, which adds bigger water and oil coolers, a beefed up electrical system and slightly more powerful brakes.

440-450 crank HP on 93 octane with just a tune, correct. So they left 28-38HP on the table (20-22HP of that is lost going from 93-91 octane) allowing for dyno variance, etc. This was on a Cartec/MAHA with real fans btw.

That's awesome you get to work with stuff like that. So are the headers really as good as Ford claims when they say people won't even need to look to the aftermarket because the stock ones are so good?

Keep in mind I only saw prototype headers, but they are typically as nice or better than production parts since they are lower volume and not outsourced.
I will say that they aren't as good as the OEM headers on the S85 M5/M6s, and if the S65s are of similar design (haven't seen a set up close, yet) they aren't as good as them either.
The S85 headers are incredible with the cats removed and a properly shaped/sized cone inserted, honestly I think they are the nicest OEMs I've ever seen on a car. V10 M5/M6s with this primary and secondary cat delete with an otherwise stock exhaust regularly walk on (hard) full S.S. exhaust cars with no cats in the Gulf. All else equal, even software (and they even swapped complete exhaust systems on two otherwise identical M5s to compare) same result with both cars. Major props to BMW for that. The 63 manifolds are truely garbage by comparison.
Anyway, yes they can and will be improved on. 70-80% of overall power gained from a LT design vs OEM log (which have come a long way in the last decade even though they aren't pretty) comes from the collector design. Definite improvements to be had in this dept. Also this motor needs 1 3/4" primaries and aftermarket 300cpi high flow cats or off-road mids will always gain vs an OEM 500-600cpi met. cat.

Port angles, valve sizing, etc aren't on par with BMW's N/A jewels but for a domestic 4v V8 it's pretty much the cats ass, especially at that price.

Oh yeah, for less than $35k it's looking to be a pretty badass motor. Not to mention the aftermarket will have parts galore available in no time. Will be interested to see what this motor does with a mild cam swap, exhaust work and a tune. Will probably be an easy 475hp.

Actually the Ford line up is one of the best right on. Aside from the Ranger-Focus there are no bad cars. The upcoming Kuga and Fiesta are amazing. If Ford produce an SVT version of the Fusion it would be perfect. For some reason an AWD Fusion with a Mazdaspeed3 engine would be on my shopping list.
