Need Advice on a DB9
These are beautiful cars no doubt.
But anyone have any first hand experience with astons (the DB9 has a 6.0L V12) and if you want to daily drive these? It would be for my father, he drives less than 12,000KM a year. How are these to live with, maintenance, reliability, warranty issues. A used Aston is not really a good idea for a few reasons,but that could apply to any real high end used car.
Very few sold in Canada and only one dealer in Ontario which means that parts will be crazy expensive and hard to get.One thing to remember is that you are buying parts for a $250000 car not a $80000 one.With virtually all new cars getting major service outside the dealer network is virtually impossable because of the specalized service tools that are required especially in Electronics.Even at our Ford store we get a lot of business from independent shops sending newer vehicles over for diagnosis because they lack the specialized equipment to do that. The last Aston that I drove was a DB7 and I was not very impressed with the driving experiance but I am sure the DB9 is a lot better. |

I had the chance to drive a DB9 and they are pretty sweet. I agree with Gearhead though. If that is the style you are after I say go with the Jag. You could probably get a much newer R type for less than 90K

I have a sailing friend who is the parts manager at Grand Touring. He says that the Aston's are very good now compared to the past. While they start chasis life the same as the Jaguar they are a totally different car, especially the DB9 with the 12 cylinder. Have you heard this at full wail?
While parts and service are expensive he did say that for a low mileage daily driver it is OK. By the way anything in that price range is going to cost a lot for parts and service. In fact VW has some of the most expensive parts and they own Bentley. Remember who owns Jaguar now. Aston is now back in the hands of a true car enthusiast. Are you dealing with Dean Jordan at Grand Touring? He is excellent and comes from the factory so can give you a lot of inside insight into the car. Good luck and please please bring out the DB9 to a get together if your dad pulls the trigger.

Well I don't know any of you (yet) but FWIW, the Vantage was to be the dream car that I could never afford but was going to happen. The M3 (waiting to be ordered) was next. But after looking at both (and an XKR also), the M3 won out because it was the kind of car that I appreciated for what it does, not what it is. The Aston (any Aston) is a fantastic car and stunning to look at. I met Ian Callum a few years ago in Detroit and told him that I'd someday own one of his designs. Could have happened but it didn't. I've made the right choice. But as for yours and your dad's preference.....quite frankly, driving and owning anything in this range (including the Bentley) shouldn't cause concern about costs associated to upkeep. Reliability - yes, but upkeep and regular servicing, no.
JMO (and would I have one as an occaisonal driver if I could afford it.....absolutely!!!), Mark |

Your father would have absolutely no trouble at all getting around in this vehicle on a daily basis. They are quit comfy and easy to drive. Fun to if you wish it to be so. Not the best to throw around though I don´t think that may be an issue.
