Computer retarded - Need advice

I have a Sony VAIO laptop that needs a new screen and to have the drive wiped and reloaded. I already have the new screen but need to have it installed by a shop. Can anyone tell me what's a reasonable price to install a new screen and have the drive wiped and reloaded with new software? Thanks all.

shops are expensive with that stuff.. shop around for smaller shops and get quotes, dont go to the big name stores they can charge over $200 for each. if you dont have the software and a valid OS it will be more money for licensing also if you need the data first backed up and reloaded they will prob charge a bit extra for that. OS installs are so easy now, i bet if you youtube a install video you can do the whole wipe and reinstall yourself.

300 should be reasonable for a shop if you know someone they would charge less. i would do it for 250 or so for everything mentioned above

Breaking your laptops' screen is usually the point when you buy a new one. Most cases I've seen, the price of getting and installing a new screen is about the same as just buying an outright new laptop anyways. Coupled with the fact that you want to wipe your HDD, I see no reason why you chose to repair it.

If you bought your replacement screen from a reputable retailer, I'd probably just return it and get a whole new laptop. Then part out your old laptop on ebay if you want to recover some $$$.

Well, I've got another Sony laptop, a new MacBook and a desktop but I really just have an irrational attachment to this one because it's the one I took with me on my last deployment. Just needs reformatting cause of viruses.

well, its better to go for new one or perhaps a refurbished one rather than doing all this

Some of the reviews for your notebookparts.com website seem to discredit it.

There are more than a handful of poeple that aren't happy.

This.

Other then your attachment to it. You may also run into this problem. Are you 100% sure it's the screen that died and not the flat wire that connects from the mother board to the screen? They tend to fail from the constant opening and closing of the screen. If that's the case there usually is no fix. As the wire has a connector to the screen but is soddered to the mother board. I had a similar problem on one of my last laptops. Just had to get a new one since the wire failed and you can't resoder onto the mother board.

Damn, I'd help you out if you were closer man. Definitely skip Geek Squad and similar big chain services - try to find a small local place. Should be around $100 at one of those places.

I remember my screen going out on my dell xps m1330 - it was still under warranty but I asked the guy how much it would've cost me to fix it if it wasn't and he was pretty honest in saying that I'd be better off ordering a new one.
