before i bought my e46 m3, i was considering a 335 and went for the m3. i recently had the pleasure of having a 335 as a loaner while my car was in for service and i gotta say that i very much enjoyed the ride of a 335 and the different power delivery than the m3. it was pretty comfy and had lots of torque (something that the e46 m3 definitely lacks) but for me, the handling and steering killed the entire experience.

when my car was ready to be picked up, i hopped back into my m3 with a big smile on my face and while the 335 is a very good car on it's own... i'm happy that i picked my m3. and to those who say that the m3 isn't a good daily driver... then i dunno what they're talking about. my m3 is my only car and i've been commuting 120 miles a day with coilovers installed and i love every bit of it. it's quite surprising what you can fit in the car. it's very much a daily driver that you can bring to the track (which every owner should experience at least once!).

if you do pull the trigger, i'd certainly suggest buying some kind of warranty to cover the unexpected repairs that might come down the line. but i say go for it!

I have a 03 E46 M3. If I may, no sparet tire. I do all maint. myself so labor costs are not involved. One said valve adj. every 50K is in the ball park but you can get it done for 4 to 500 dollars.

The E46 M3 is such a great car except, stay away from the SMG and have your subframe inspected. Apart from regular maint. she runs like a Swiss watch. Very reliable but above all that it puts a smile on my face every time I drive it and that is all the reason for me. It has so much that some new cars are lacking. To say the least the hidious styling of the new generation, sorry but that's how I feel. The fun factor is a 10+. I say the only pure drivers car better then the E46 M3 is the previous E36 M3. It's not as pretty but you put a S54 engine in it and then you really will have the Ultimate Driving Machine!!

I was in this same position about 13months ago... my 06 E500 lease quickly coming due and me needing a replacement vehicle. I checked out the 335 coupe, sedan, manual(in both), Auto(in both), AWD(in both)... and felt they drove too much like a big car... the feel reminded me of my E class... and I wasnt looking for that...

Then the dealer brought around a 2004 SG M3 SMG... and damn, I was sold on the look over the E9x body style... its an older looking car, but its def a piece of artwork. Test drove the car... and instanty the same corners I was taking in the 335s were much more fun... I could toss the M around and the car was planted and felt much more solid in the turns then the E9Xs... my salesman even kept urging me to push it(well known salesman in the area, had a bit of track experience as well) I was all but sold on that 45 minute test drive. As soon as I was able to track down a 6MT to drive... that was it... I knew the E46M was the car for me, it took me a couple weeks to narrow it down but when I did, I drove from Boston to Jersey to pick it up... well worth it... the only car I am thinking about now is moving onto another M3.

I daily drive it, in fact I put 25k miles on the car in roughly 11 months of driving other then oil changes every 7k miles and the basic maintenance(inspection 2) I have had no problems with it... knock on wood

In my opinion, E46M3 was way better "drive's" car (if you're looking for a performance car, not comfy cruise lux car).

I got rid of 335i after 7k miles/10 months later while searching for a new E90M3, I bought 99 M3 with 31k miles only for in-between time. I actually loved even E36M3 over 335i so much more.

My logic for E90M3 was:
I loved new gadgets in 335i but didn't like how it feels/drives.
I loved my E46M3's feel/handling etc but can't even look at the old nav anymore after spoiled by E92 335i.
I chose E90M3 that has 335i's gadget + E46M3's feel/drives/handling.

To me (who likes performance driver's car), I'll take an E36M3 over 335i. (even E46M3, E90M3 can't match E36M3's natural handling capability).

Speaking of Maintenance for the E46 M3... I have only spent like $110 every 10,000 miles for oil changes. I did get my RTABs replaced and belts pulleys, VANOs inspection by Toan... And that came out to only about $300. This car seriously is not that expensive to maintain. If you continue to check on your oil, tires, bushings and engine bay then you will have a car that will last a long long time. For those that don't do these check ups once a month then ya your car will have more problems due to the lack of inspection.

OP. I was in the same shoes as you and I went with the e46 m3 SMG. I test drove both and the m3 was the clear choice. It looks so much better and feel so much ferocious than the 335i. maintenance cost is not that bad if you buy the parts yourself at tischer and get a reputable indy shop do the work. For example, my inspection II cost 650 bucks canadian. That dirt cheap compare to stealer.

I daily drive my m 90 miles round trip, no problem whatsoever. I put in 40k miles in 1 year. more than the previous owner drove in 5 years combine and it has zero problem so far other than the alternator went bad due to me neglect to replace the battery soon enough.

Make sure you buy one that come with lumbar adjustment. Mine didn't come with it and it gave me lot of back paint until I shoved some towel in the back panel. But that is the only complain.

Everything else about this car is excellent. looks awesome, feel awesome, fast for street application..will get you in trouble in no time, prestige, etc.

SMGII absolutely rocks.

You can drive it as smoothly as any manual/automatic if you get to learn it.

Do not listen to the haters about SMGII.

I have had my car since mile 02 (at 50K now) and SMGII was ahead of it's time. Wonderful transmission.

Search for Sebring M3 on youtube... first hit, that's me.

E46 M3 should be a more fun car to drive if you care more about handling and road feel than you do about stoplight racing.

E46 M3 barring rod bearing failures seems to be a pretty reliable car.

Subrame issues... yeah... gotta pay attention to that one
