Canon Rebel XT or Nikon D50

I know this is posted in all forums, and the choice is based on which lens you want to go with in the future.

But I am looking for which camera takes the best kits straight out of the box in the "kit lens."

Both are going for $599 at circuitcity and I will be going to pick one up. Of course the feeling of the camera when I visit the store will play a huge factor, but my main concern is pic quality. Thanks

Nikki I just got my Girlfriend a sd800 it's a pretty sweet camera!

To the OP I think Costco is running some great deals on D70's right now. I think Nikon makes a better SLR.

If you're new to dSLR (which I assume is the case with you looking at these cameras) then either will be capable of spectacular picture quality compared to what you're used to, unless you have a recent model or high end point and shoot. That's even with the kit lens.

The whole point of dSLR is interchangeable lenses. Take a look at which lens system you might be interested in. I chose Canon, because their range suited my anticipated needs and pocket book.

-----

One last word of caution - Many reviews knock the kit lenses of both camera's you mention. As an amateur dSLR user, I have found this to be nonsense. Yes - the kit lens may not be as good as some of the pro lenses out there, but it is far from lousy. It is STILL the lens I use most and while I have bought other lenses (ultrawide angle and zooms) the kit lens is capable of excellent images. Only when you really start to inspect you picture can you see its flaws, but you'll be far to busy learning about aperture/iso/shutter speed/f-stops to care!

Good luck! Happy shooting!

I've seen that Nikon is coming with a new DSLR, the D40 to replace the D50 and Canon Rebel XT(350D) has been replaaced with Rebel XTi(400D).

D200 FTW! The D40 got some decent reviews, it seems to have a nicer featureset than the D50.

Picked up a d50 kit plus a couple of lenses from costco. Here are a couple of pics. Don't even know how to work the unit really and still takes decent shots.

Berries

Highway

Rocks, fun.

Congrats on your purchase! Now the fun starts. Some advice:

- Get yourself out of the fully automatic mode as soon as you can. The point of an SLR is control. If you bought it to get 'the best camera possible' you should have gone with a point and shoot camera, which would have served you better. SLR photography is all about control.

- Take lots of pictures. Take the camera everywhere. Shoot everything anything of interest, pets, furniture, your yard, your E90. Manipulate the controls and check the results on the photo.

- Get yourself a book. I got this one and found it was really good on the basics.http://www.amazon.com/Sammons-Comple...e=UTF8&s=books

- Talk to as many people as you can about photography. You will be surprised how many people have this as a hobby and can help you learn.

Some of the berries are in focus and others aren't. Set the camera to shutter priority and close down the aperture to increase the depth of focus and try the berry shot again. With the SLR there should be a button on the left side of the lens mount that allows you to temporarily close the aperture while composing to judge the depth of focus.

The same can be done to get the steering wheel in focus along with the instrument cluster. The same with the rocks.
