New US racetrack could become the US Nurburgring!!!

It's called the ring of the Rockies. New mega-racetrack being built in Colorado. This could be the F1 venue we have being dreaming...

Looks cool...but...the Nürburgring costs, what? 23EUR per lap? Did you see the membership costs for this place?

Guess they have to make it pay off - I'm sure the liability insurance is a bit pricey.

A couple Tilke Squiggle tracks and a runway? And with all the country club allure of excluding minorities? I think I'd rather spend the money to fly to germany, rent a car, and drive on the real ring. At least the beer would be better.

Looking at the place I can see why the membership price is so high. That doesn't mean you'll never get to drive it though - just wait for a track day.

It'll obviously cost a hell of a lot more to rent this place out as a track day but with the giant size of the track your run groups can be a lot larger without being crowded and you can split the cost over a ton of people.

We can always hope for Nurburg-like open days but I'd be surprised (I'd also be in the car 10-min later). How do they manage the insurance liability in Germany?

The Nurgburgring is basically a public road, there is no liability if you crash you're responsible just like if you crashed on a public road. The police still have control and will give you tickets for passing on the right, avoiding the speed limits where they exist (they do exist) and being wreckless.

Back to the topic at hand, I think it's great that such a track is being built but unless it's as easily accessed and affordable as the real thing, it won't quite satisfy my dream of a Nurburgring of our own in the US.

At times of public access, the Nürburgring is considered a public road. Traffic laws apply e.g. no passing on the right, no tailgating. However, because the track is consistently more than 12 meters wide, there are no speed limits whatsoever and there is no police on site to check non-existent speed limits.

As required by German law, any vehicle with German registration has to be insured. Therefore, you have coverage on any public road. Because the Nürburgring is a public road at times of access, insurance coverage applies.

Does anyone else think this is a stupid idea considering it wont be open half the year since its in Colorado?

Perhaps building it elsewhere like in Arizona, Texas or one of the more southern states would have made more sense. Just my 2 cents.

I got this email today, and i'm tempted even though I live in Florida...

Has anyone thought that it could be fake? Seems like quite a huge thing that nobody has heard of until now. Until I see construction photos I'm not really convinced.

It's on the eastern plains, hence the lack of extreme elevation changes. Other than a snowstorm once a month during the winter that melts off after a few days it can be open most of the year. I have driven through there when it was 60 degrees in February and March, a few days later a storm can blow in but it's not west of Denver in the mountains where the snow stays around. Which is why the ski resorts are on that side of Denver. A friend of mine has lived up there for almost 20 years, he loses about as many motorcycle riding days as we did living in Oklahoma City or Dallas.

If it's like the tracks announced here in Texas over the past few years it is all to get investors on board. There have been a couple of country club tracks built in the DFW area, a few more were announced. There is one built in the Houston area and another under construction (the last time that I heard) and one was built in San Marcos between Austin and San Antonio. Most of these are nowhere near F1 level tracks in distance or safety regs, they are country clubs for the car people, a few have residences on them but nothing approaching a even a Barber or Miller.
