connecting the OEM hi-fi subs to aftermarket amp.

Can it be done? I know the hi-fi subs are 2 ohms and are being fed 40w by the OEM amp. I'm planning to get a 6 ch amp to run a new set of front components and the subs. Since I'm still undecided on what to replace the OEM subs with I figured I'd leave them alone for now and just hook them up to the new amp. The new amp does 180w @ 2 ohms. Do you guys think I would explode the OEM subs w/180w?

you are asking if you can power 40w subwoofers with 180w?
short answer is NO
way too much power
just replace them with the earthquake subs

The reason I was asking is because I don't really know what I want to do with the subs yet. So hooking up the OEM would be a temporary thing while I figure it out. I'm not sure what the actual rating of those woofers are. All I know is that the OEM amp feeds those woofers 40W. Just throwing the SWS-8 in there is not really the answer because if I decide on going another route then I'll just be wasting my money on the SWS. I'm already looking at something different but I'll have to confirm with my installer tomorrow whether he thinks he can do it or not. What I'm looking for is a 0.3 cu ft sealed enclosure that can provide about 3" of mounting depth for the woofer. If he can build something like that, then the SWS will probably be out of the consideration.

Right now I might have to change my game plan for the amp too since it looks like it will be a really tight fit if at all. I'll probably be going down to my local dealer tomorrow to have the amp test fitted. Right now, the only thing that is really set is the replacements for the 4" mids and tweeters in the front doors. Those have already been purchased.

no i meant why not put the SWS-8 subs hooked up to your aftermarket amp?
the people who have done that said it made a huge difference
you could always keep the oem amp powering the oem subs only till you decide?

Got something different and hopefully better in mind. I will post an update once everything is figured out.

Did it & worked very well. Used 200RMS/woofer.

Clean power won't wreck the woofers....... unless you're playing test tones.

Alright. I'm kind of having second thoughts because of the cost but the subs I were thinking of are Alto Mobile Falstaff subs. They are very similar and supposedly designed by the same guys who designed the legendary Phase Linear Alienate subs which are said to be one of the best SQ subs ever.

I''m having second thoughts because to have the enclosures made are going to be expensive not to mention the costs of the subs alone are about 3x that of the SWS. I think what I might do is just go ahead and drop the SWS-8s in the OEM enclosures and hook them up to the new amp. If it satisfies me then I'll just leave it alone. If not, I'm sure I could sell the SWS to someone and then put the rest of the money into the Altos. The only bad part is that the Altos have been discontinued for about 4-5 years now so my window of time to be able to get them is rather short.
