2008 M3 coupe demo good deal?

Hey

I am considering a never titled demo and wonder if you guys think this is a good offer. They explained to me that it has never been titled but cannot be sold as new. I don't know what that means.

2008
space gray
silverstone interior
Tech
Prem
Enhanced sound

around 1800 miles MSRP $66,385

I am thinking somewhere between $49,900 and $52,000.

I read these forums regularly and see deals even better than what I am considering offering.

Any advice is appreciated. I really want an M3 but there are always so many reasons to wait with the economy and everything.

I spoke to this dealer and aluded to a sub $50k offer and he was not happy.

A never titled car should be new. If they say it isn't new it is probably because they punched it for a sales incentive at the end of the month. Ask them the punch date b/c that is the date the warranty starts.

what does punched mean?

they informed me thw warranty is until 10/2012. must have done that in october of 08.

they indicated it was driven by a BMW exec. I don't know what any of that really means.

I guess they needed to get it out of unsold inventory? eh.

punched = reported sold to BMW NA. There must have been some sales inventive for them to punch it at that time.

the warranty started that date so really you have 3.5 years of warranty left. Sub 50k is the most I would pay. Since they seem unwilling to do that, better for you to just walk.

Now I am really curious. What could be the reason?
Do you think the car is fine for under $50k?
How do you know these things, do you work that area? car sales I mean.

thanks for your comments

I wouldn't pay more than 48k for this car.

What could be the reason they punched it? They counted it as a sale. If their CSI scores were high enough they got another $3k at year end. There was some incentive for them to punch it.

It was probably a car that was used for some purpose by BMW NA. Could have been driven by an employee (BMW NA- they get 6 month leases at very good rates), used as a press car, used at the Performance Center, etc etc etc. My real qualm is that you have lost 6 months of warranty. You should ask them if they can CPO it (they probably won't be able to, won't want to or you won't want to pay the additional cost). It does have a warranty so I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

How do I know these things? I am old and this isn't my first rodeo with BMW introducing a new car. The stories don't change much over the years.

Aren't there state laws that set the maximum mileage at which a car can be sold as new? Is it possible the 1,800 miles explains why the dealer can't sell it as new?

I think 49k would be a fair price

thanks for all the input guys.

The last email the dealer sent me indicated they would not sell for $52k. Summer is coming and they feel it will sell.

It might, that is a risk I have to take, I suppose.

the fact that summer is coming is not gonna help, all the sports cars dealers are gonna have to be optimistic after the hits they took in the winter...i think 52k is too high, but if you really want the car, what the hell...if its the colors u want, options and all that, 49k or 52k, in the grand scheme of things ull just be pissed u didnt get a good deal, but u got what u wanted.
if this car isnt everything u want or dream about or isnt ur color choice WALK.
but if it is, i would go with a signed check for 49k or 50k if its what u really want and drive it home that day.
cash in hand and offers are too very different things.

Actually it doesn't have heated seats or cold weather. The sat radio can be added.

I live in Pitt PA, it is cold 6 months out of the year.

thanks everyone.

You may want to find another stealer....or just follow these forums...there are '08 coming for sale by fellow board members...you would be much better served buying an enthusiasts car than one that was hammered by some "BMW exec"

not a good deal. get a car that you like... with the miles YOU put in..

basically, thats 1800 miles of abuse. IF it was the exec driving the car.. do you think he cared for the car enough to break in the care properly? ( i dont think so )

dont be too stingy. this is a big purchase.. i would just invest a little more. save the "possible" headaches of purchasing "DEMO" car (apparently a demo driven by an executive) and buy a new m3. You may have break downs or problems that can occur later. good luck on your decision.

$49k is the absolute max I would pay for the car. It is definitely used, titled or not. I also agree that 1,800 miles would be a little concerning considering it was a demo or some variant of it. I think they're smoking crack if they think they're going to get $52k for the car as we get closer and closer to the '10 MY. With a sticker of $66,385, invoice should be in the $61500-$62000 range. There is a $7500 rebate of "trunk money" on the '08's, so that would put you around $54,500, and this is all assuming the car is new. It's not. I don't know if you caught my thread from a few weeks ago concerning my '08 M3 purchase, but I bought mine for $49,900 + TTL new with 230 miles on it. The sticker was $69,745. The deal they're offering isn't spectacular. You could find better elsewhere.

My $.02.

Trevor
