There is always two opinions on basing competitors, one is size and performance and the other is price, this is because most people set a price limit on their spend and almost always spend within a 2K of this figure no matter what range of cars they look at.

It's only when the price gets silly that actual price doesn't matter and it pure comes down to performance and requirements.

I would agree with swamp that the CTS-V is not an M3 competitor but I could see why someone else might feel different.

I just got an M3 after recently driving a friend's GT-R a couple of times, once for an extended period through the Austin area's best twisties. I have no doubt that there's no sub-$100K car that I could drive faster through that same stretch - the performance was brilliant...but the performance doesn't directly translate into fun.

The M3 engine sounds so much better than the GT-R's, it's nice having a choice of trannies, and rwd is more engaging if not necessarily as fast. But the biggest difference for me if the 4 doors, to get my child seat in the back (reason I traded my Cayman S). Also, I don't think I could stomach GT-R ownership costs.

That's one of the most reasonable arguments for the M3. If I could only have one car that both felt sporty and is very practical it would be the M3.

Exactly. I've got a friend who says hands down he'd take "X" car over an M3 simply because it costs more (the M3 is one of his favorite cars, however). I, on the other hand, just like the M3 better all around, regardless of the fact that it costs less than alot of cars, and would personally get the M3 and pocket the rest of the money. I like cars for what they are, as do alot of people here. It's never really been about keeping up with the Joneses for me when it comes to cars. You'll never be ahead in that race because any car you buy will be "last year" within 6 months at least.
