The World Motor Sport Council only announced on Tuesday that the 2009 F1 World Drivers' Championship would be decided by the most number of race wins and not the traditional points system.

With opposition from the teams and the question of whether the FIA could even change the rules so close to the new season, they have now relented on implementing the system immediately.

"On 17 March, the FIA World Motor Sport Council unanimously rejected FOTA's proposed amendment to the points system for the Formula One Drivers' Championship," read a statement from the FIA.

FIA just can't randomly change their sporting regulations illegally!!!

really great news. we could be in line for a really great season. absolutely no reason to change a system that has worked for so long!

That would have for sure killed F1. They need some young fresh blood running FIA. Bernie...retire already. There's already enough anticipation with the new chassis and KERS for 09.

Although the medal winner takes all was a stupid idea, there is a need to reward first place more than they currently do... There is just not enough incentive for a 2nd place driver to go after the win with the current 2 point spread..

All they need to do is use something like:

5
4
3
2
1

and any such combination to reward 1st place a bit more..
