Today's Autozeitung says BMW is currently favouring the term "M Coupe".
Best regards, south

I'm all for them keeping the weight down but I'm really wondering how. Cars keep getting bigger and bigger. I mean just look at the difference between the original M3 and the e90/e92. As much as comfort is a plus I hope they don't increase the overall size of any of the cars in the line up and actually I hope it shrinks slightly. I know we Americans are fat asses but comon.
It would also be cool if they could offer some kind of map switching like in the current M cars but instead of power/sensitivity settings how about an extra lean economy map for highway cruising etc. That could help bring down emissions. Either way... I'm hoping that new "M Coupe"/1series lives up to the hype and is a true 2002 parallel (cause I'm too young to have ever experienced one of those).

I could do a Tii 1 series. I think that would be a nice badge.

Oh no!!!! That was not a good article at all. No more NA M V8's and V10's. I hate the idea of a twin turbo v8 and turbo sixes powering M cars. They better rev over 8000RPM at least. There is no way BMW could build a crappy vibrating V6 over there silky smooth naturallly balanced Straight six. That would be the end of Bimmer.

Let me think about this for a minute.... they say the new 1M will have a four cylinder engine! Thats retarded considering that you can already get a 6 cylinder twin turbo on the 135, so unless they plan on putting 4 variable geometry turbos on the 4, my guess is that it will never make the power the 135 makes with a $500 tune. Ive seen a 135 make 400hp on a dyno, so why would anyone buy this car. Now getting the n54 and strapping it with twin scroll turbos makes for one sweet and powerful combination for the 1M OR the M3... OH and as for BMW building a V6!!!!! LOL, the day that happens, I am sure 99% of this board would have already switched to audi or mercedes just by the thought of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M12 http://www.gurneyflap.com/bmwturbof1engine.html Nothing like that will ever make it to a production car. But it doesn't have to. We can look at the S85 V10 and S65 V8 to see how BMW applies their motorsport technology to street engines. So, perhaps BMW's turbo four will be 2.0L+ instead of 1.5L, will only rev to 8000 RPM instead of 11,500, and will only make 400hp instead of almost 1300hp. That's good enough to best the competition, and certainly good enough to find buyers.

Nothing sounds/feels more beautiful than a high-revving NA BMW engine...The thought of a big turbo M version 1 sounds like fun though!
Note to BMW- please continue to focus on weight savings if anything else. Thanks!

Sounds great. The high revving V8 is nice but a lighter turbocharged V6 M car sounds great. I just hope gas mielage is improved. I can't even imagine driving my car around the way I do if gas went back to $4-$5 a gallon.

Hate to be the one to let you know but the horsepower wars are over. Enter the efficiency wars! If they can get the next 1 series down to around 3,000lbs (opposed to the ridiculous 3300-3400 its at now), give it around the same hp, improve efficiency 5% and add on the M goodies like 6 piston brakes etc we'll have a winner. Oh and the damn thing better have a LSD! Oh and I second the i6. A v6 would be blasphemy and marketing suicide. That's like Coca Cola changing their formula... you just don't mess with perfection or in this case comparative advantages.

For the love of I6, if they go the V6 route they'd be selling out their very soul! A BMW is supposed to be all about a smooth-as-butter-yet-strong-as-stroh-rum inline 6 (if we're talking 6 cylinders here).
Sure, V6 is shorter therefore needs a shorter bonnet, but again, BMWs are supposed to have longer bonnets than it's competitors. Besides, what technical advantages does a V6 have over an inline? Really now? Crankshaft maybe isn't as flexible (not necessarily a bad thing) and it's shorter. Gee. An inline 6's advantages? Where should I begin? It's smooth, it sounds friggin great, has more power strokes, IT SOUNDS FRIGGIN GREAT etc. etc. etc. BMW, if you're reading this, take note: The day you produce V6s is the day I become a Merc fan... ![]() |

i would kill for a new M3 with a turbo I6.
One of the things that made the M3 sooooo special was its unique engine that no other sports car on the road shared. It used to rip through V8 like a mofo. Now, the M3 has a V8 like every other sports car. Its a very special V8 and I appreciate and enjoy every aspect of it. But... I'd really like to see the M3 lose a lot of weight, go back to a better turbo I6 and shorten the wheelbase a bit - make it a bit more square ![]()
