The Pirelli Sotozero IIs are great on the in between weather, including cold/dry and ice. Here in the Denver area we get a lot of snow days, but then it dries up pretty quick and rarely stays on the road for more than a day. Of course, there's some hot/dry performance given up to the PS2, but surprisingly little (you wouldn't take these Pirellis to the track unless it was an ice race). The really shine in the dry cold, staying soft and compliant and don't feel squirmy.

Heres my E90 M3 in our last snow storm.
Had it defrost in the garage overnight.
As you will see, i was plowing the snow pretty well.
I'm suprised i didnt get stuck.
This car is a little tractor in the snow.

I just got my M back from a service appointment (reprogram CA keys) so it was nice and clean in the snow near my home. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a winter setup yet so I'm still on stock 19's with summer tires(!). So today it's resting in the garage while we take out the wagon (535xiT).

In case anyone wonders how summer tires perform in winter... my driveway is about a .005% slope and I almost didn't make it into my garage! The compound gets so hard below freezing that it slips like crazy even on dry pavement. I can't wait to get a winter setup going so I can start DRIVING again!

they are all over eBAY. There are E92 and E93 only I believe...havent seen E90s but they should be there too!

thats whay i am using all into the city and back in montreal winters. car is surprisingly capable, climbing hills sometimes is a challenge though.

+ 1 I agree, I have my lexus GS for the winter with all seasons, shes been pretty good to me.

Plus driving the E93 in the winter is also not good for the rubber seals and mouldings in the roof and as per my shop foreman at the BMW dealer, they can detoriate over time at such extreme temp's creating windnoises, creaks, water leakage...etc etc.

The BMW warranty only goes to a certain extent to take care-off windnoises so dont wanna end up with those problems!

FYI: for those who are leasing I wouldn't care, but since I bought my car out and keeping it for a few years, I most certainly would like to take care of it and avoid salt at all costs

WOW! How did you not get stuck? I haven't got snow tires for mine yet (as I won't need them till next season) but I think if I saw that much I'd just stay at home and not risk getting my baby stuck (she is a daily driver though).

I own. The car is designed to handle salt. Just wash the underside regularly and then very thoroughly in the spring. I expect to keep mine ten to fifteen years, as I usually do, and don't think that a little salt will ruin those plans.

Dave,

theres many reasons for someone like you to worry then, whos keeping there cars for 10-15 years:

1. Little Salt? I live in the GTA area, they use a lot of salt here!

2. Congested City - leads to higher chances of accidents! especially with the Gardiner, 401 and major regional highways we have around toronto!
I know even in summer there is a lot of cars on the road, but there is less chances of some idiot who makes a miscalculation and crashes into your new m3

3. If you drive a vert, its a fact over time the seals in the roof will start to detoriate and the car will develop wind noises and creaks...as per the shop foreman at my dealer.

So in the end if i have a second car to drive why not?

What a bunch of crap. It's just a car. It's meant to be driven, not worshipped. I rest my case.

You DO indeed cite some good reasons not to own a 'vert. Those things will happen no matter what you do AND it weighs a bunch more.
