Is EDC a necessary option in pothole ridden Toronto?

I plan on buying an E90 M3 in time for my 40th Birthday in September, my goal is to get a Manual with the M-Drive. PDC and USB connection would also be nice, but not deal breakers.

The only option other than the above listed ones I would consider is the EDC. I know there are a million threads on EDC in this forum and I assure you, I have spent a lot of time reading them.

The thing is many of the people who comment on these threads live in Arizona, Florida, California and other warm weather areas these comments are not relevant to our frost heaved, potholed streets. I would love to hear input from people who live in Southern Ontario, and Quebec and other parts of Canada (and the Northern US) who live in similar climates and have similarly crappy roads. How important or unimportant is EDC?

Also if anyone knows how much weight is added with EDC would also be a bonus.

Thanks

I'm limited to my test drives, but I feel like it made a difference here in Seattle. I-5 is pretty bad, and you can tell a difference between comfort and sport.

I have EDC on my car but it wasn't by choice (got one of the 3 remaining 2008s in Canada, EDC was included)... however I must say after driving with it for the past few weeks it is definitely something I would order again. The ride in comfort mode is noticeably better/more comfortable than my previous E90 325i w/sport pkg... the roads in my area are brutal but the ride is very smooth/comfortable and I've had many comments from friends on how nice it rides. Potholes/busted roads had not been an issue so for that I'm grateful my car came with EDC. The biggest test was my wife, she didn't like the ride in my 325i (especially with my 19" summer rims) but quite enjoys the M3... that is she enjoys the ride when we're putting around town. When I'm hammering the gas up to 8000rpm on an on ramp is a different story of course.

On the flipside putting EDC into normal/sport makes a huge difference in terms of stiffening the car up. Normally for spirited driving the normal mode is fine as I find sport too hard/jarring but we'll see which is best on a track (hopefully this spring at Mosport).

Yes, the real reason I'm considering EDC is for my wife , she hates my 'hammering' my little Jetta let alone an M3. In the same vein, I'm getting a 6 speed so that she can never drive my car.

EDC makes a huge driving difference in E-town so I am sure it be the same in T-dot

The brutal winter roads will punish you.

I leave my car in comfort mode all the time and it is a great DD car.

I just M-pow it when I wanna step up the feedback

Like Vise, I was not really given the choice (got one of the few remaining '08s left) but I do NOT have edc and do not feel like I am missing anything. With the stock 18" wheels, the car is no harsher a ride then my '06 325 with sports package was. Would it be nice to have? Sure! Would I pay a pretty penny for it...I don't think so. But then again, I have never tried it.

I have EDC and I would order it again if I get another M3.My car rides much better than my wifes 335 with the 19's does. She has commented on this many timesThe best thing is that with a touch of a button the car is good to go for the track.

Great feedback, unlike the US posters, seems like us Canadians are very much in favour of the EDC.

for the e90 or e92 i think its important, because they have VERY stiff normal suspension setups and you'll want comfort mode when dealing with bad roads

the e93 is a bit softer, so its less necessary....although I do enjoy having it in mine.

I also have the EDC and would order it again for the $$$. I must admit that I have been doing almost all of my winter driving in normal mode, but I do notice a difference when I put it in comfort. Also, in the summer I love to be able to hit the button and drive in sport, it really makes that car responsive.

IMO - It is a great option to have for our roads and you (or you wife) will not regret it, as it does make the M3 a great DD and track car. However, it is not a must and the M is still a great car without it.

First of all - buying yourself an M3 for your 40th - congrats and well played!

I would say - if you are ordering or the car you are looking at one in dealer inventory with it, as well as the other options you want - take it! Price seems right for some pretty neat technology.

I bought my car out of inventory - that was equipped the way I wanted it, but did not have EDC - so I took it and have no regrets. Having said that, if I ordered I would have taken it, because really why not.

Good luck!

I didn't care to have it at first but I had no choice as mine was also one of the last remaining '08 E90's. I'm embarassed to report that I've got it permanently set on comfort mode (I've been driving an E46's since 2000 and the ride on both my 330ci and M3 were really harsh!).
I haven't driven an E90 without EDC but given the choice I would pay for it next time around!

I actually turned the EDC to comfort mode this morning on my 50km route in and it made a huge difference on the roads. I actually changed my settings to select comfort, and will switch it back once spring arrives.

Seems 40ish is the golden age for a M purchase. I've had mine for 4 months and turn 40 in May.

Oh and I don't have EDC on mine either. Got one of the last ones off the lot and only one they were willing to deal on so no choice on options. The ride is rough but certainly not horrible. If you are used to cars with a harsher ride due to sport suspensions or whatever you'll be fine without.

Mine is set on comfort mode all the time and it only changes for serious driving.By the way I am an old guy at 54 and my 1st M(E30) came at the young age of 33 in 1987.

I have EDC and I wanted specifically with EDC. Is it worth $2000? Maybe.

But then again why do you buy an M3 and not a 335 if you are not gonna get all the goodies right? (unless you have no choice like some people here who got great deals)

If you are ordering from scratch, don't think about it, just get it and you won't regret it.
