I've owned two E46 ///M3's in the past (..PY w/ IR interior; IB with ///M cloth-leather), and the most recent E46 - an IB Comp. Package coupe lowered on TEIN coilovers - was my all-time favorite car. I ultimately traded my coupe for a 330i sedan because of a past relationship (..long story!!!!!!). I eventually traded the 330i for the new ///M3 sedan. Had I still owned my '05 Comp. Package when the E9X M3 arrived, I'm not sure that I would've been eager to trade up. I truly loved that car!
On the flipside, I really love my current ///M3 as well. They are different, yet familiar. I do still get excited when I see a lowered IB Comp. Package E46 though. Nostalgia probably! |

Sorry for replying because I never owned an e46 before my e92 but I would still like to comment.
I agree with what some of the other members are saying about the e46 being such a beautiful car. I still give e46's a double look when I see one on the road. There was much more pressence with that car, much more (I'm in your face) stance. Don't get me wrong, I love my e92 and the technology on the car is quite impressive but put it next to a 335i and it doesn't stand out quite as much as the e46 did to the 330i of its day. The e46 was noticably wider and even though the e92 is wider than a 335i, it doesn't stand out as much.

That combo sounds amazing. I'd like to see a Phoenix/Laguna myself. Does anyone know if anyone has ever had that combo?

Thanks man! It was a brave choice, but I had to stand out from the sea of TiAg 3-series cars that littered the streets (..and the forums) at the time; now we're dealing with a sea of Alpine White. Oddly enough, conservative Mercedes drivers often complimented the wild PY/IR color combination. |

I came from a E46 M3s also, 2002 BMW M3 white/red convt. with 13k miles that I just traded in on my E90 M3 sedan.
I had a 2005 BMW M3 coupe silver/black but sold that for my 95 Supra TT 6 speed, and picked up a E36 97 M3 also. I currently still have the Supra, E36 M3 and now the E90 M3. The E9x M3s are great machines I love the car, I definitely do not regret trading in the E46 M3 on it. I get my 1200 mile service on Wednesday, so then I can get the full experience of the car.

I switched from an E46 to an E92 about 3 weeks ago. And I still miss my E46!! Don't get me wrong I'm REALLY pleased with the E92 but the E46 just had that x factor about it. Standard for standard the E46 is a much stiffer more agile car IMO. I was dissappointed with how soft the ride was in the E92 even though I have EDC it just didn't feel as taught, so I've dropped it on Eibachs.
Power delivery between the two is also worlds apart, the E46 you had to work a bit harder with the straight six to keep the pace up and you couldn't just put your foot down in 6th doing 50ish and expect to make a smooth overtake, in the E92 this is possible. The V8 is just such a powerhouse it is alot more forgiving if you're in the wrong gear ut can get you to warp speeds in no time. IMO the E92 with the sport button pressed feels like the E46 as standard. When I bought my E92 I still had the E46 for a couple of weeks afterwards and so was able to drive them back to back numerous times. For the first few days I thought I'd made the wrong decision buying the E92!! The E46 feels like an M car from stock settings whereas with the E92 you need to mess with the I-drive to get the feeling you desire. In terms of quality the E92 is miles ahead of the E46. The seats are far more comfortable and feel more quality. In essence the E92 feels more of a GT car in terms of size and driving characteristics. Here's some pics I was able to take as a comparison.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yay my first post...
I am coming from a 2002 M3, and got my e92 M3 about a month ago. I feel that the cars are day and night, and have no similarities what so ever. I feel the E92 is a more comfortable car and has a more luxury feel than the E46. For example, the steering and the shifter for the E92, is significantly softer, shifter is shorter, as well as the clutch is feather, and the shocks are comfortable. Another difference is how quiet the E92 is specifically the exhaust note and in the cabin. IMO I liked the rasp of the E46. I have the feeling that the E46 was more of a driver's car than the E92. I guess since things have gotten so technologically advanced on the E92 is why I feel this way. One example would be hill assist. Personally I do not like this feature but not a big deal. One cool thing about the E92 is the m mode which I feel is a must if you do get the E9X M3. Also the E46 has more of a go cart feel, the nimbleness that the E92 doesn't have. The E92 IMO feels significantly heavier. As far as appearance goes, the E46 by far stood out more amongst it's own breed. I was surprised to notice that the E92 M3 is a huge car, or at least it feels that way when I drive it, and the way it fills up my garage where the E46 used to be. Just wanted to share my thoughts. |

i agree with the people that said that the e46 m3 was a lot wider compared to their little brothers...the v8 doesnt hurt the e92 M as well...
As far the things I wont or will miss about the e46 I actually like the rasp for some reason on the e46. I think it gives u a relief or power thats coming out when hearing it I guess I have to stop by my local dealership for a test drive soon...I cant wait... |
