This is the reason I kept my E46 M3. Arguably in many eyes the most aesthetically appealing of all BMW's and the very last of the 6's. Hmmmmmmm, who knows maybe in the years to come I can sell it at the Barrett Jackson for $500,000.00 alla the Cudas and Challengers. Or maybe not. Im happy with what I have, and hopefully if the gremlins can be eliminated in the E92 I can add this beauty in my garage by 2010.

lets not forget people that f1 cars of the 80s had turbos and still had 10k+ redlines. it's still possible for bmw to produce beautiful engines even if we have to go the FI route.

I don't really care if it's forced induction or not. As long as it's fast and fun to drive.

yea, their are always things that car companies do that disappoints its enthusiasts, but true enthusiasts stay behind and love what they drive and trust the judgment of the car maker, in my mind e46 M3 is probably the BEST m3 ever made, some people i know may disagree but from my point of view that car is just purrrre BEST. i will love to own one and since all this new M3's are coming out 01-05 M3 prices are dropping like sack of potatoes. EX. i saw one 520HP active autowerke supercharged m3, over 10K in mods (excluding the supercharger) was for 35.000. man and thats NOW, from 1 year from now when i will be looking cars for myself i HONESTLY believe that i can find one decently used M3 for 20-25 Grand. and i am sure i will be keeping that car for a very long time.

BMW to abandon high-revving engines in M cars; X6 first M to get turbo

Tough emissions standards worldwide and soaring manufacturing costs in Germany are behind BMW's decision to switch from high-revving, naturally aspirated engines in its M high-performance vehicles to turbocharged direct-injection powerplants, beginning as early as next year.

The move, which could alter the character of BMW M models, places question marks over the immediate future of the M3's 4.0-liter V8 and the M5's 5.0-liter V10. Both engines will make way for forced-induction engines in coming years, according to high-ranking BMW sources.

The first M vehicle to make the move to the new turbo powerplants is the X6 xDrive M, which will challenge the Porsche Cayenne GTS and the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG.

Set to appear next June, the X6 xDrive M will be the first model to run BMW M's new twin-turbocharged V8. This engine is also earmarked for the next-generation M5, due out in late 2010.

Based on the standard X6 xDrive 5.0i's 4.4-liter 90-degree V8, the new twin-turbo unit is said to match the current M5's naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V10 for power at 500 hp, while providing as much as 516 lb-ft of torque.

This should be enough to provide the M-powered X6 with 0-to-60 mph acceleration of less than 5 seconds and top speed limited to 155 mph.

"In terms of overall performance, the new engine doesn't give anything away to the powerplant we run now, but it delivers much better consumption and lower emissions," a senior BMW M official told AutoWeek.

The move comes as Mercedes-Benz's AMG performance unit is planning to turbocharge its 6.2-liter V8 when it introduces direct injection in 2010.

Besides developing new turbocharged engines, BMW's M division is also planning to equip new models with features such as automatic stop/start and brake regeneration in a bid to cut fuel consumption and emissions.

BMW is also testing a new driveline incorporating technology from next year's X6 ActiveHybrid, with a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack used to power an electric motor to boost performance levels.

I think the e92 will end the era of true drivers M-Cars. The of the fun car era.

I don't see anything wrong with that at all maybe now I'll buy an M if Porsche Turbo and some other cars like the F40 can do it so can BMW and they will be great at it.

Talking Bmw Drops M Cars" V8 And V10

BMW's new M-powered versions of the X6 will be the first car to get a new turbocharged direct-injection V8 as the firm begins to move away from high-revving, naturally aspirated engines for its high-performance models.

Increasingly tough emission standards and soaring manufacturing costs have pushed BMW into the decision, which could alter the intrinsic character of all BMW M models.

The future of the 4.0-litre V8 in the BMW M3's and the 5.0-litre V10 BMW M5 is unclear, as both will make way for forced-induction engines, well placed Munich insiders have said.

The M-badged X6, which will be called xDrive M, is due in June. Its twin-turbo V8 is also earmarked for the next-generation M5, due in 2010.

Based on the X6 xDrive50i's 4.4-litre V8, the new unit is said to virtually match the existing BMW M5's V10 for power, at 500bhp, while providing much more torque - up to 516lb ft.

This should be enough to provide the top-of-the-line X6 with 0-62mph acceleration in less than five seconds.

"In terms of overall performance the new engine doesn't give anything away to the powerplant we run now, but it delivers much better consumption," a senior BMW M official told Autocar.

The moves comes on the back of confirmation from AMG that it is planning to add turbocharging to its 6.2-litre V8 when it introduces direct injection in 2010.

As well as developing its own new turbocharged engines, BMW's M division is also planning to equip new models such as the X6 xDrive M with features such as automatic stop/start and brake energy regeneration to improve fuel consumption and lower emissions.

The M Division is currently testing a new drivetrain incorporating technology from next year's X6 ActiveHybrid. The system uses a nickel metal hydride battery pack to power an electric motor, providing added new levels of performance.
