Tough question. If you ask that, you should also ask if the Federal Government should save us from earthquake, flood, fire, drought, tornado, bank collapse, unemployment, suicide, drug abuse, poverty, invasion, mafia, street gang, Certainly there are many more examples. For most people, the answer is probably "yes" to some of these, and "no" to others. It's not really a black and white issue.

If that were true they should have some say on where people live in the first place and not allow people to build stick built houses on the beaches where hurricanes are known to frequent.

Those who have chosen to build/live in the face of know risks such as hurricanes and floods should only get federal aid if the event exceeds a 1 in 500 year event.

to save i think is too much to ask. i dont think it can be done unless we have excessive resources and manpower. to aid i think is the closest thing that they can do.

I was talking with my wife about this the other day. She had heard some proposal that areas at high risk be used for parks, or training areas for military exercises. That sounds like an wholly unlikely solution as the risk areas are either too large for the one use, or too small for the other.

Maybe the residents should be encouraged to put up grass huts. Or in New Orleans, to tear down the leavee and convert the city into an American Venice.

This is why you have insurance. When you live in any area that is extremely prone to huricanes, you know the possible consequences.

Sure the government, state and local first then Federal, should help get those out that can't help themselves. Those being in nursing homes, mental facilities, and things of that nature.

But FEMA doesn't need to give continual extensions to payments to people who refuse to work. The governement HAS TO STOP giving out continual aid like this.

I was yelling at the TV just the other day . . . Somebody had taken the time/effort to move a bunch of people out of NO before they got flooded. Then the evacuees were COMPLAINING it wasn't as clean as their own homes. OK, at this point your own home is under water, what the F do you want?!!!! "They dropped us here and then the busses left" Yeah, they went to get more people out . . . they are not your personal bus to escort you to WalMart when you get bored in the evacuation center.

My blood was boiling when I saw the news interviewing "Katrinians" a year or so later filing for extensions.

What exactly did I see? A bunch of lazy people sitting on the stairs at apartments.

What did I hear? When asked why they were filing for an extension, and why they weren't working this was the reply....."I cain't work, cuz I hurt". Excuse me you lazy piece of shit. You can walk up and down stairs, stand there and fax papaers to get more free money, then go back to sitting on your ass on the stoop but you can't work? That pissed me off.

I get so tired of getting attitude from people at Krogers and when I grab fast food. When I get a positive attitude I honestly want to tell them how refeshing it is to see a smile. But I don't want them to take it the wrong way so I don't.

i don't think it's their job to save US, as citizens, however, i do think it is in their best interest to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed as soon as possible, it's in everyone's best interest, obviously.

Florida was hit by eight hurricanes in 2004-05 and I don't recall hearing a bunch of whining for handouts. We dealt with it and went on with life. I think it's called personal responsibility.
