Palin Power: Fresh Face Now More Popular Than Obama, McCain
Friday, September 05, 2008

A week ago, most Americans had never heard of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Now, following a Vice Presidential acceptance speech viewed live by more than 40 million people, Palin is viewed favorably by 58% of American voters. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 37% hold an unfavorable view of the self-described hockey mom.

The figures include 40% with a Very Favorable opinion of Palin and 18% with a Very Unfavorable view (full demographic crosstabs are available for Premium Members). Before her acceptance speech, Palin was viewed favorably by 52%. A week ago, 67% had never heard of her.

The new data also shows significant increases in the number who say McCain made the right choice and the number who say Palin is ready to be President. Generally, John McCain’s choice of Palin earns slightly better reviews than Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden.

Perhaps most stunning is the fact that Palin’s favorable ratings are now a point higher than either man at the top of the Presidential tickets this year. As of Friday morning, Obama and McCain are each viewed favorably by 57% of voters. Biden is viewed favorably by 48%.

There is a strong partisan gap when it comes to perceptions of Palin. Eighty-nine percent (89%) of Republicans give her favorable reviews along with 33% of Democrats and 59% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

She earns positive reviews from 65% of men and 52% of women. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows that Obama continues to lead McCain among women voters while McCain leads among men. The Friday morning update—the first to include interviews conducted after Palin’s speech--showed the beginning of a Republican convention bounce that may match Obama’s bounce from last week.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of Americans believe that most reporters are trying to hurt Palin’s campaign, a fact that may enhance her own ratings.

The Palin pick has also improved perceptions of John McCain. A week ago, just before he introduced his running mate, just 42% of Republicans had a Very Favorable opinion of their party’s nominee. That figure jumped to 54% by this Friday morning. Among unaffiliated voters, favorable opinions of McCain have increased by eleven percentage points in a week—from 54% before the Palin announcement to 65% today.

Fifty-one percent (51%) of all voters now believe that McCain made the right choice when he picked Palin to be his running mate while 32% disagree. By way of comparison, on the night after Biden gave his acceptance speech, 47% said that Obama made the right choice.

Eighty-one percent (81%) of Republicans say that McCain made the right choice while just 69% of Democrats said the same about Obama.

Among unaffiliated voters, 52% said that McCain made the right choice for his running mate and 45% said the same about Obama.

Forty percent (40%) now say that Palin is ready to be President, if necessary. That’s up from 29% last week. Forty-nine percent (49%) say the same about Biden.

However, following the Wednesday night speech, voters are fairly evenly divided as to whether Palin or Obama has the better experience to be President. Forty-four percent (44%) of voters say Palin has the better experience while 48% say Obama has the edge. Among unaffiliated voters, 45% say Obama has better experience while 42% say Palin.

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of voters say that Palin’s speech helped McCain’s chances of becoming President while only 10% believe it hurt those prospects.

While Palin’s numbers are stunning today, it remains to be seen how the Alaska Governor’s numbers will hold up through the next two months. She has made a tremendous first impression, but the country will get to know her a lot better between now and November.

Palin should just run for president and McCain should be her VP pick.

Unforunately, if she did run for Pres initially, she would have lost.

McCain Campaign Crowds Grow Exponentially
The 'Palin Factor' Bringing Excitement and Bigger Crowds to McCain Events
By BRET HOVELL
Sept. 9, 2008

At John McCain's rally in the town of Lee's Summit, Mo., there were more people standing outside than were able to fit inside.

That kind of crowd just hadn't been seen at McCain's events before last week's Republican convention.

Saturday in Colorado Springs, about 10,000 people waved American flags at McCain's rally in an airport hangar there, and Friday in the town of Cedarburg, Wis., there were more people crowding the main street and the surrounding blocks than the population of the tiny town.

These numbers seemed unfathomable to the campaign just last month.

So what happened?

Two words: Sarah Palin.

A typical McCain event before he announced the Alaska governor as his running mate averaged only about 1,000 people. Now 5,000 has been the low end of turnout in the last few days, and the biggest event last weekend drew about 11,000.

"Isn't this the most marvelous running mate in the history of the nation?" McCain asked the Wisconsinites Friday morning one the Republican ticket's first day of barnstorming after the convention. "Sarah Palin -- she's magnificent."

The Arizona senator's pick for a running mate seems to be a huge hit within the party. Homemade signs about Palin were seen in greater numbers in Missouri than were signs for McCain.

Cheerleaders from a high school in Albuquerque, N.M., Saturday night launched a Palin cheer while warming up the crowd -- but no such cheer went out for the presidential candidate.

Crowds at all of this weekend's stops found cause to interrupt the proceedings with chants of "Sar-ah! Sar-ah! "

McCain seemed enthused too.

"I could not ask for a greater partner than the governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin..." McCain told the crowd in Albuquerque, Saturday night. "Because the response, the response to her has been overwhelming, it's been incredible, she's ignited America. I'm so proud to have her with me."

So proud, in fact, that McCain asked her to stay on and campaign together a little longer than previously scheduled this week. Palin had planned to head off to campaign on her own in swing states before heading back to Alaska for a few days. But the joint road trip has been extended.

Actor Robert Duvall claimed to have known about Palin all along. At the New Mexico event, he was on hand to cheer on the new political couple.

"About a year ago I first saw this wonderful woman speak," the veteran of "Lonesome Dove" and the "Godfather" movies said. "I didn't know who it was. And I said who is this woman? And a year later, I said to myself about three or four weeks ago, why isn't she up for the vice presidency?"

ABC's Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller contributed to this report.

You may want to run this new line of attack past the Alaska Democratic Party because they have an anti-Ted Stevens website that said (it has now been removed - SHOCKER!) “Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere” and the “State of Alaska killed bridge”. They go further to credit Governor Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere. The site states: “She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.” (emphasis added)

This contemporaneous CNN story backs up the governor's role in killing it as well.

ABC plans prime-time Palin special

NEW YORK (AP) — Charles Gibson's interviews with Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will form the basis of a special prime-time edition of "20/20" Friday, ABC said Wednesday.

Gibson is traveling to Fairbanks and Wasilla, Alaska, for the first TV interviews with Palin since she was selected as John McCain's running mate. The first excerpts of the talks will be shown on "World News" Thursday.

Gibson is having three separate interviews with Palin, ABC said. Parts of the interviews will be spread around other ABC news programs, including "Nightline" and "Good Morning America."

The prime-time special, at 10 p.m. EDT, will also include a bio of Palin by ABC's Kate Snow and a round-table discussion on the presidential race moderated by George Stephanopoulos.

The Alaska Republican has proven to be a ratings-grabber during her short time on the national political scene. Her speech to the GOP national convention last week was seen by more than 40 million people, according to Nielsen Media Research.

A Fox News Channel documentary, "Governor Palin: An American Woman" last Saturday was the highest-rated prime-time documentary in the network's history, with 2.7 million viewers.

CNN is also planning a Palin special this weekend.

Hmm.. So it stacks up that the democratic VP choice is more qualified than their Prez choice. Whereas it is the opposite for the republican party?? Which would you rather have?

Personally I would rather have McCain with more experience die, and then have Palin as president with just as much experience if not more than Obama.

Thursday editorial: 10 questions for Sarah Palin

Two weeks after John McCain named Sarah Palin as his running mate, she is finally going solo with the media. She’ll spend the better part of today and Friday with ABC News anchor Charles Gibson.

Until now, Palin has not participated in news shows, press conferences or interviews. A team of media handlers has been preparing her for the Gibson interview.

Ducking questions does a disservice to voters. The public needs to hear from the rookie Alaska governor who, in a few months, could be a heartbeat away from a presidency held by a man in his 70s.

Here are 10 questions we’d like to see Gibson pose to Palin.

1. Why do you and McCain insist that you told Congress “no thanks” on the Bridge to Nowhere?

You’re on record supporting the project until it became an object of national derision.

Follow-up: If you really want credit for nixing the bridge, shouldn’t you return the $398 million the federal government gave your state to finance it?

2. Can you and McCain credibly denounce federal earmarks when you asked for $27 million worth as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and when your $750 million wish list as governor was by far the largest per-capita earmark request in the nation?

Follow up: Eliminating all earmarks would reduce next year’s projected deficit by only 4 percent. So what are your ideas for managing the costs of health care, retirement benefits and defense spending?

3. Are you fully cooperating with the Alaska Legislature’s attempt to learn whether you or someone in your family or staff improperly pressured the state’s former public safety commissioner to fire your former brother-in-law from his trooper job?

Follow up: What’s your explanation for the commissioner’s departure?

4. What are your reasons for questioning the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is caused by human activity?

Follow up: What evidence would cause you to change your mind?

5. How does allowing drilling in environmentally sensitive areas square with your claim of standing up to the oil companies?

Follow-up: Would you support overturning the Bush administration’s decision making polar bears an endangered species?

6. In your convention speech, you ridiculed Barack Obama’s views on terrorists, saying “he’s worried that someone won’t read them their rights.” Do you disagree with the U.S. Supreme Court that suspects should be able to challenge their confinement before a judge?

Follow up: Are you concerned that some people rounded up in the war on terrorism might not be legitimate suspects?

7. What was the Bush administration’s biggest mistake in its handling of the Iraq war?

Follow up: What exit strategy do you support?

8. You are on record as opposing all abortions except to save the life of the mother. As vice president, would you take an active role in the movement to outlaw abortion?

Follow up: What is your strategy for reducing unwanted pregnancies?

9. How independent are you from the Bush team when many of your advisers came from that camp?

Follow up: As vice president, who would you tap for advice?

10. If you make motherhood a centerpiece of your public biography, should you realistically expect your family to be off-limits to media coverage?

Follow up: Did you consider turning down McCain’s offer to protect the privacy of your family?
