Tire Wear on Track
I have a noob question.
Will the front or the rear tires on the M3 see more wear on the track, or is it equal?

it depends...mostly on the layout of the track...but it most powerful front engine rear drive cars like the M3 the rears will wear out faster......

Depends on if DSC is on or off
The rears should see more wear than fronts. How heavy your foot is will determine by how much.

Drifting around the turns, or any slip at all will tend to wear the rear tires out alot quicker, the front tires are pretty much used as the pivot point, all and all the tires are gonna wear pretty bad on the track, but moreso the rears

you will get a lot of wear on the front shoulders, in particular if your running below 35-37PSI

Hmmm...after your first session, take tire pressures (near) immediately as possible and 'equalize' all pressures to 35-37psi.
Also, I wouldn't worry about wear, moreso on understanding the limits of the car and myself... -Rich |

If you go clockwise around the track, you'll end up with the front left wearing through the shoulder first. If you get a square setup, you can rotate the front left to the back right, and the tires will last longer. Then you can flip them on the rims for another set of sessions.

that depends largely on your driving and the track layout and surface - there are members here that just got a couple of track days out of them before they needed to change them.

I found my front left tire took most of the abuse at NJ Motorsports Park, Thunderbolt circuit. I think I could get 6-10 track days out of a set of PS2s based on the wear rate that I got pushing hard during three track days.
With that said, I purposely left it in 3rd gear and didn't use 2nd gear on the two slowest corners in order to not tear up the rears. The engine was still at about 4000 rpm in 3rd at the apex while using 2nd would have obviously given me more straightaway speed after the turn.

On a technical track with heavy braking like NHMS, my fronts are pretty much shot after 4 track days. The rears look okay. The moral of the story: if you will be pushing your car hard, do not track it with the PS2s. They are too expensive to replace at that rate, plus they do get mushy up front toward the end of a session if you really get on the brakes.

Have done three track days so far, have gone through one complete set of rear PS2's (the left rear lost a 3" x 6" patch down to canvas), but I did a LOT of drifting. Fronts are just about shot too........as said above the front left shoulder/sidewall is in bits, with canvas showing through in small places.
Problem for me is that I have the Brembo BBK which wont fit over 18" rims so tyre choices are more limited in 19" setups. |

I'm almost ready to commit to a purchase on those. I'm just waiting for more lightweight track wheels to hit the market. This season is almost over, and I'm sure there will be more wheels available by next spring. I like the Advans (they recently released a specific wheel for the E9X M3), but they are pricy. I know you have the Turner wheels, but my understanding is that those don't have the right offsets and need spacers. I'd like to avoid spacers.

I found the stock PS2 19" had very good grip at the track...BUT the shoulder wear is concerning...& I was coming off the track at about 43.5psi hot..about 34.5 cold.....my tire temps were between 160-180F hot....the front tires really chewed up the outside shoulder...the little design on the shoulder is GONE..on both front tires....the rears actually look pretty good, but I also ran with MDM all day so I wasn't spinning them too much :>)
I would guess they wouldn't last more than a few more track days at best before cording the shoulder...
