I saw the article too, and immediately thought "bullshit". BMW will continue to make V8 and I6 engines well into the future. Probably V12 and V10 also. However, clearly they will need to decrease the number of them, while increaseing I4 production - just like every single other auto manufacturer on the planet. Plus, I strongly doubt that this will effect the engine mix in the US much, due to BMW only being marketed against luxury cars here. In may parts of the world they are competing at lower pricepoints against Ford Mondeos and Opel Vectras as well as Renault, Peugot, VW, etc. As long as Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, and Infiniti maintain their luxury status here, so will BMW. That means offering eight and six cylinder options for those who want them. And even with higher gas prices, people still want them - this forum is proof of that. So is all of E90post for that matter.

Why is this a bad thing? THe old M3 didn't have V8s... and we love them just as much!

What the article not so clearly states is that the engine production AT THE MUNICH PLANT ONLY is going to be switched to 4 cylinders instead of the sixes and eights they make now. BMW will continue to make 8's for a while and 6's for a long while although their percentage will be reduced due to market demands.

Good point. But is an expensive option for them to continue to develop V8s just for M. Maybe in F1 we start seeing TT 4's or 6's ... that may influence M div's decisions, as it is a nice marketing halo to have the link w/ F1.
