WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- John McCain's smoking history and age indicate Sarah Palin would have as high as a 40 percent chance of becoming U.S. president, a university professor says.

McCain, 72, a former smoker poised to become the Republican presidential nominee, has about a 20 percent of dying in office and a higher rate of disability, John Banzhaf, George Washington University professor, said Wednesday in a release.

Palin, 44, McCain's running mate, is governor in Alaska.

McCain's smoking history boosts his risk of dying from lung cancer by about 700 percent, and his risk of dying of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also is greater, Banzhaf said. His age increases his odds of becoming disabled from conditions such as a stroke or Alzheimer's disease, which can impair judgment.

McCain has a 10-year death rate of between 35 percent and 50 percent, the professor said.

i think its possible he already has onset of alzheimers or dimentia, its just not so pronounced as to get noticed yet. i think that 65yrs old should be the cutoff age to start a presidency. mandatory retirement.

honestly that's not a bad idea, we have a lower limit, why not an upper...
the stress alone may kill you...

he does seem agitated and angry all the time, short tempered and can't really recall the things he says...even only weeks ago...with delusions of persecution

he said obama wanted to lose the 'war', then today he twisted it into, 'he doesn't have good judgement'...that's bizzare

Couldn't agree more. 65 is the cutoff age for airline pilots, and rightfully so.
I speak from personal experience.

Perhaps you could look at it as a 60% chance that Palin won't be POTUS - I guess it's all a perspective thing.

It bodes well for McCain that his 94 year old mother was in the audience watching his speech.

I asked a question. In a Politico.com forum, someone had indicated that Obama was born to a 17 year old mother. Is that true, or not? The same poster implied that Obama was conceived before his parents were married. Is that true, or not?

I am asking questions because I do not know the answer and it was a parallel to what Grizzle was saying about another candidate. Fair question.
