MP wants speed limiters for cars too

Todayís Trucking Jack Meli September 2, 2008

OTTAWA -- If truck engines can be governed, then why not cars as well? Thatís what Scarborough, Ont. Liberal MP Jim Karygiannis wants to know.

A former parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Transport, Karygiannis recently introduced a private members bill that would require electronic speed limiters set at 150 km/h on passenger vehicles manufactured after Jan. 1, 2010, according to the Midland Free Press.

While the proposed threshold is still 40 or 50 km/h higher than most posted highway speed limits in Canada, Karygiannis said he chose 150 km/h because thatís the speed that authorizes police to confiscate vehicles.

"Why does anyone need a car that goes over 150 when you canít go that fast or you lose your car," Karygiannis told Land Line, the official publication of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA).

In order for his bill to be heard in Ottawa, Karygiannis said he needs to convince the Conservative speaker of the House to allow debate.

Karygiannis admitted that there is not much support at this moment.
WOW! You guys are losing freedom left and right... You need to fight back or in time your going to be living in a communist country.. same goes for the USA. Laws to protect the people is another form of rights removal. What a bunch of Socialists. BS!! First your guns.. now your cars. Wake up!! I hate seeing this kind of big government control. Ok.. I think I am done. just pisses me off.

This would easily be fixed with aftermarket software if it ever takes off.

I wouldn't worry about it, just some grandstanding before the elections.

We have the world's lamest politicians.

That is what they said about bill 203 also.He said he is going to reintroduce it after the election. We cannot take a chance with this bill as any aftermarket changes to the the limiter will also be illegal.

Any measure can be countered....

Imagine if this law came into effect, the most effective way would be to get the OEMs to implement, and it would likely use software like they do today.

Dinan's SW eliminates the limiter as does the Turner Motorsport piggyback.

Canadian politicians are slimy, sensationalist knobs.

I doubt they will give us a off/on switch for the limiter.

AND that is one of the reasons I moved to the U.S. Man cops there are such asswipes. Some lady crashed into me on my bike and because I was yelling and being rude the cop charges ME with dangerous driving. I fought it and won. Honestly guys, Ive lived in Mississauga (ontario), Dallas, Texas. Fort lauderdale, Florida and now Tampa, Florida. BY far. the OPP is the worst most unprofessional police you will ever face. They pull you over because they "felt like it". Excuse me? Bunch of BS. It Actually got to me so much that I moved from the damn country. Bunch of pricks. AHHH I feel better now.

I don't live in Ontario, but I am mad about that shiat. What's next? A system that monitors your speed, and if you go over, you will be ticketed automatically. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING!
I think manufacturers will step in and fight. Look at what Porsche did in London

Well - I sent in my email as reproduced below!

Quote:
Dear Mr. Karygiannis,

I am writing to let you know that I strongly disagree with you regarding Bill C-568 ( http://www2.parl.gc.ca/HousePublicat...Mode=1&File=24 ).

I am a lifelong Liberal voter who for the first time will vote for the Conservative Party and you have the honour of being "Straw that broke the camel's back." I am sick and tired to the Liberal Party's non-liberal ways. I thought being liberal meant: http://www.yourdictionary.com/liberal . Instead you and your party stand for taking away liberty and freedom in the name of safety. Benjamin Franklin stated that, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Some Liberal Party of Canada! Really!!

I am taking the Liberty (since I am a true Liberal) of sending a copy of my email to your Party Leader. Between Ontario's Liberal Party's "Street Racing", banning guns (try taking guns from criminals - they will not hand them over), putting limiters on cars, Carbon Tax, This Tax, That Tax etc. - I am most displeased with the Liberal Party and it's controlling ways.

I look forward to the next election and will vote for Liberty - and this year it seems as though a vote for Stephen Harper will be a vote for less control and more Liberty.

My best regards,

Last week in LA, several innocent people got killed by street racers (in their altima or sentra, or something like that). One family lost 3 people. Not good.. and this kind of law are created because of those irresponsible racers who ignore the limit of physics...

A law with a speed limiter is the wrong solution to the problem... maybe this is a law lobbied by the Yaris owners...

We should send letters to car manufacturers too. They have the big lobby $$$....

A nice BMW neutered at 150 kph means I will not be buying nice cars and supporting the economy.
