Possible to shift from 5 to 3?
I am fairly new to 6mt and I have this question. Lets say Im crusing at low sppeds, like 40 and im in 5th gear, someone wants to play so I downshift. Can I go say from 5to 3? oR do I have to go down one at a time. I know it also depends on speed. Can u guys shed some light please? Thank u

You can go from 5th to 3rd at low speeds. No problem.
If someone wants to play, just floor it after the gear change and you will be start flying in no time. ![]() Best Regards, Maika

You can skip gears. Just make sure the RPMs you end up at aren't too high and risk money-shifting your engine. You should also consider rev-matching when you do so to prevent any unnecessary wear on your synchros/clutch.

Start getting comfortable at what speed you are at roughly 6,000RPM in each gear so you know roughly at what speeds you can downshift to the proper accelerating gear.

I do agree he needs to get the basics lucid, but then I doubt that he will just shelve downshifting altogether until he does. What I am saying is, if he is going to downshift (particularly something like 5 to 3 where there will be a a large RPM gulf) he should rev match, otherwise he is just putting unnecessary stress on the car.

just blip hard if you are at higher RPM

You can go into any gear from any gear just as long as you match yor revs. For down shifts, a blip or heel-toe is generally recommanded.

I didnt get DCT because I wanted a a 6mt car coming from an auto. I know DCT is closest to 6mt as there is but I still wanted the real thing. This is my first 6mt car and although I know how to drive it well (the basic tha is) I really dont know all these terms u guys are using or what they mean.
So if someone has a few minutes of their time to spare, would u mind mayb explaining what rev matching is or what u guys mean by learning what speed is at rpms, etc. If there is a thread already on this, I am sorry. I can drive it well, although I dont know if its me but first to second feels a bit nothcy, especially at higher rpms. Anyone care to write up some basic stuff? |

Oh and one more thing. When changing gears, is it normal to sometimes here like the switching of the gear, or whatever the noise is when depressing clutvh and switching gears? Like I said, im really sorry if these are dumb questioons, just trying to figure things out. Few ppl have said its normal on a 6mt to hear the little gear changing noise, but wanted to run it by u guys.

Search "How a Manual Transmission works" on the internet (not here), and try to find a few sites that explain how it works exactly. Some will provide animations which help clarify the functionality. That should answer your basics questions.

I agree with everything that has been said thus far, but when you are doing "stong" braking on track etc... you should NOT skip gears and should learn to master heel and toe. It will greatly change/improve the way you start into bends entirely.

Yep, that is correct, I downshift as I brake aggressively with heel and toe at each down shift and do go from 5th to 4th to 3rd and then to 2nd. Speed approximately 240 kph to maybe 50 kph (donīt really see the speedometer as you may imagine when I hit the beginning of the bend).
