Question Rear LED's

Does the current E92 have LED rear lights? They look very similar to the 1 series coupe and that does have LED's (written in brochure).

Sorry can't seem to find it elsewhere due to many posts on new facelist.

Many thanks

Not LED's

Hi

The tail lights on my 2007 E92 M3 are little push fit 18w bulbs. Hope this helps?

Yes the roadside parking/rear tail lamps are LEDs, the other lamps (turn signal, brake lamps) are not LED. This is confirmed in the manual.

From my understanding, BMW calls it LED Technology but they are actually 1156 bulbs that feed light through a tube to give it an LED look.

That's what BMW used to do with the pre FL E90. The tail lights of the E92 and E93 are real LEDs however:

For comparison the pre FL E90:

Nick,

from your vantage point do you see any after market COMPLETE (like E46) LED tail light kits on the horizon?

The brake lights of the E92 are real LED. Rapid firing deep red Light Emitting Diodes, as are the license plate lights.

According to the manual the brake lights are H21W bulbs. The licence plate lights are LEDs indeed.

For the E92/E93, probably not for the near future. The aftermarket lighting manufacturers tend to wait for the facelift to come out so their product is not outdated by the time it gets produced. Once we see what the updated E92/E93 tail lights are from the factory, we'll start seeing aftermarket upgrades. I saw the same thing on the E46, LED tails were not huge until after the facelift was out and confirmed.

I wonder if BMW chose this functionality to favor easy bulb replacement. Quite a few of my friends had their entire tail light assembly replaced on LED equipped E46 ///M3's due to faded/burnt out LED's.

question regarding facelift

I have a 2009 E93 on order, and since this will be my weekend car, I am wondering if waiting for another model year would get the FL change?

is it possible there will be front LED stripe like the Audi's and full LED rear light unit?

When do you think the E92/3 will get LED turn lights on front and rear?

When the E46 went with LEDs, I remember BMW touting the fast response time of the brake lights. It seems odd they would go back to the older technology. Theoretically, LEDs have a useful life approaching 50k hours, but maybe that did not work out in practice in that application.

LED's are superior. They backtracked so they can, again, have something "new" for the 3 series. That, plus it will give it an updated look that should be more appealing

Wish they were LED; as my left brake bulb apparently went out last night. I had a "brake bulb malfuncition" appear in iDrive.

A 4 month old car and the bulb burnt out already
