If the clutches goes, does the tranny?

I was speaking to a friend who works in the auto industry and he told me the sealed clutches cannot be replaced. If the clutch goes, the tranny just gets replaced. Has anyone else heard this? The guy who told me this works for a European auto mfg.

BMW says the clutches in the DCT transmission will last the lifetime of the car. I highly, highly doubt anyone would design a transmission where a wear item (clutch) is not replaceable.

I guess it depends on the costs of a tranny and a replacement.

If itīs a lot of work to replace the clutch it might be easier for BMW to replace the whole transmission!

Yeah a DCT tranny swap will be quite expensive 10 years from now. However, like others have said the clutches are built to last.

The getrag dual clutch transmission in the new Ferrari California is one such transmission with that design.
