Update:
Dealer just called and the broken exhaust valve spring will be replaced and repaired under warranty according to BMW NA. I wasnít able to ascertain if this was due to the issue being caused by a defect or if they just wanted to avoid a stressful confrontation with me if it was an over-rev.

Once I get the car back Iíll report on how well it is running and if they were able to elaborate on the actual cause of the issue.

Again, thank you all for your input and comments.

That is good news.

About the "money shift". Back in the day in my E36 M3 I was SCARED to death of the money shift. I had a friend taht did it in his 1998 Dakar M3 coupe. like 5000.00 later the car STILL didnt run right, and IIRC it never did. So when it came time to buy my E46 M3 I went for SMG for this very reason, and I will shortly be ordering DCT

Dont call me a wuss, I just would rather not chance it, and I really like the sequiential boxes

Trust me, if you overreved it, they would know, and they would be making you pay for it.

Glad to hear it is getting taken care of!

Don't blame ya! I money shifted my E36 once...and I was just "cruising" around...NOT paying attention, tired, etc. lol. At the track and when driving "spiritedly", I was always on top of it. Go figure I would do it when I wasn't even trying to drive hard. hah

my car jsut had a similar problem, i.e. engine fault recuded power on the idrive. Vibrations from the engine, not pulling properly from low revs in high gears, (before the reduced power).

Turned out that it was the ignition coils. They had to replace all of them! Job diagnosed and completed in 48 hours. The dealer actaully took the coils out of a new M3 in the showroom and put them in mine as he said it would take to long to wait for the parts!! Don't hear of them doing something decent like that every day.

First, good news 'Dutchman.

Second, I was coming 'round to thinking the same about m-DCT - this was a plus I hadn't considered ...

Geez...sounds familiar! They have had coil issues for years. lol. Wonder if they sourced the same companies again?

As I mentioned before, I was suspecting this was the OP's problem as well although they are telling him it's a broken valve spring. I don't understand how a single broken spring can cause a whole bank of cylinders not to fire, but I guess the ECU can shut everything down if it detects a problem in a single cylinder. Glad your problem is resolved.

Update:
My M3 is back in my hands today. It seems to runs fine. They replaced the broken valve spring and the VANOS unit. It is so nice to have it back - the X3 I had as a loaner is not BMW's best product IMHO.

Thanks everyone for your input and support.
