Feeding your M3 with Top Tier Gas

This may in fact be a repost, but there's been an update since the last time I looked at the Top Tier website, with additional buyins from manufacturers plus more retailers joining in.

At the moment, there are six auto manufacturers who have joined in a consortium designed to dictate minimum standards for high quality gasolines best suited to their cars. They are: BMW, General Motors, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Audi.

Here are the retailers who've joined in:

QuikTrip
Chevron
Texaco
MFA Oil Co.
Conoco
Phillips 66
76
Entec Stations
Shell
The Somerset Refinery, Inc.
Kwik Trip / Kwik Star
Aloha Petroleum
Tri-Par Oil Co.
Turkey Hill Minit Markets
Mileage Stations
Chevron Canada
Shell Canada
Petro-Canada
Sunoco Canada

Some interesting names are missing, including Exxon, for one.

Yeah, I know this is of interest to more than just M3 owners, but I figured M3 owners are going to be more crazed than any other BMW folks about what sort of elixir goes in your babies.

For more info, go to: Top Tier Gasolines.

Humm.. Interesting, I assume you know WAWA as well since you live in Lancaster.. I'm worried that it isn't on there.

I just put in whatever is closest when the fuel guage hits "E". I wonder if there have been a lot of studies done on this? What are the known problems associated with lesser tier fuel?

Most name brand premium gas meets top tier standards. To be on the "official" top tier list, all three grades of gas sold must meet the top tier standards.

Good post.

I just wish the West Coast could be at par with the East Coast regarding octane levels.

It would be nice to have 93 octane over here! The best I have ever seen is 91. Sux.

Exxon-Mobil is sort of notorious as being crappy gas, so no shocker there.

Read the site info, please, but obviously there have been enough problems to drive this effort - which was started by the manufacturers because of ugly warranty expenses. If BMW is concerned about it...

No studies mentioned on the site that I can see (unless I missed it). I think for now I'm going to not sweat it. If someone can show me real data though, I'd be all to happy to take a look it.

I use Shell. decent prices here (91 only in CA) and if you get a shell mastercard you get a 5% rebate on all gas purchases.

Shell here has $.06 off premium (93 octane) on Tuesday's. I have already been taking advantage of this. Need to find a good Shell GC when the thirsty M3 rolls into town.

It's funny to look across the street and see QT (91 octane) for $.15 more.
