Boy, $500 billion sure seems like a lot doesn't it?

Anyone want to guess what percentage of our GDP over the past 5 years that is?

I guess it is progress that we have moved from, "We need to surrender because we can't win" to "We need to surrender because it is too expensive."

What is especially disturbing about the website is it reliance on the ignorance of people to make its point. The Iraq War is being funded by the federal government, as it is the level of government in our system responsible for the national defense. It is not however, the level of government responsible for providing people with health care, homes with renewable electricity, public safety officers, music and arts teachers, scholarships for university students, or new elementary schools.

These are more appropriate source for such funding is the state, local, or (God forbid) yourself.

I wonder what percentage of that GREAT GDP you mention went toward healthcare, housing help, or recovery of the social security funds???

Let me answer for you:
very little, none, none!

I am funding the war via federal tax witholding!!!

Couldn't we used that money elsewhere? New Orleans comes to mind...

You really should not speak if you do not know what you are talking about.

From the Social Security Administration:

In 2006, the combined cost of the Social Security and Medicare programs represented roughly 7.3 percent of GDP. Social Security outgo amounted to 4.2 percent of GDP in 2006 and is projected to increase to 6.3 percent of GDP in 2081. Medicare's cost was smaller in 2006-3.1 percent of GDP- but is projected to surpass the cost of Social Security in 2028, growing to 11.3 percent of GDP in 2081 when it will be 80 percent larger than Social Security's cost. In 2081, the combined cost of the programs will represent 17.6 percent of GDP. As a point of comparison, in 2006 all Federal receipts amounted to 18.5 percent of GDP.

Does it come as a shock to you that the war is being funded through federal tax dollars?

If you wish to rebuild your schools, I suggest you get with your state and local officials to determine how they are spending your state and local tax dollars.

OK, so federal money is only to be used for US imperialistic ambitions?

What do you wish to do with federal money? More nukes? More invasions? What?

If I'm the one funding the war, I have the right to bitch about it.

"The terrorists who murder the innocent in the streets of Baghdad want to murder the innocent in the streets of American cities," Bush said. That is a correct statement. But why the terrorists are now on the streets of Baghdad? And were the Islamic terrorists there before the war?

Iraq was one of the few secular states in the middle East that had no official Islamic propaganda. We should have attached Iran instead. But guess what -- Iraq was a "low hanging froot" at the time.

Not secret at all. My family knew where I was.

I was in Iraq (and Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman) though. It is good to be home.

No federal money is to be used for the things the Constitution authorizes it be used for. National defense is one such thing. I have no problem updating our nuclear arsenal nor would I object to invading a county that I believed posed a threat to the nation or her interests.

I agree you have a right to bitch about whatever you want to bitch about. I just think you should know what it is you are bitching about.

Actually, you don't know what you're talking about... Federal spending can and does include spending on education, environment, homeland security, funding government research such as NASA, etc. Federal funding can also be appropriated to states with low incomes, to fund the state schools, improve cities with high risks of a natural disaster, etc.

I did not say the federal government does not spend money on such things, I said it is not responsible for those things. The feds do not hire teachers or build schools, states and counties do. The feds don't hire local police and fire fighters, cities, counties, and states do. Whether or not some congressman gets an earmark inserted into a bill to help his district fund such things does not shift responsibility.
