What's the big deal (M3, GTR)

It's 2001 all over again. The M3 is just out and the Nissan GT-R (R34) is kicking its ass on the track. Was there so much concern back then? and besides why now? its obvious the two are in separate leagues and share only a similarity in price. Can someone explain why its such a big deal now that the m3 is slower than the R35?

cause you can actually walk into the Nissan dealer here in the states and buy one and not go through a huge mission trying to import one.

as for the speed question, I would go with the GT-R if it wasn't going to be my daily driver. Since it is, M3 all the way!!! maybe M6 even

exactly.. can you imagine the maintenance costs compared to a german car? the GTR would be much cheaper and probably more reliable

I've read that several people where able to get it at MSRP and some just $5k over that.

It does seem to bother some people that the M3 isn't this almighty thing that can slay everything up to twice it's price. I listen in amusement as how DCT will make all the difference and the only reason why it is being beaten is because of the manual gearbox or maybe the tyres or something else. The difference is that the GTR was design to compete and beat with the 997Turbo and not the humble M3, the fact that it's pricing happens to match the M3 is the annoying thing as now I/you are torn between wanting a decent all-rounder which is great fun on both the road and track, is pretty quick in a straight line but is ultimately not the best at anything or choose the ultimate trackday car which is equally brilliant on the road but has an awful ride and is shitty badge.

Decisions, decisions.

The simple truth is the M3 is a bloody good all-rounder in much the same way as the RS4 or Carrera2S but it's not the best thing since sliced bread. Once you have learned to except this then you can start to appreciate the thing properly and be happy in the knowledge that the M3 will bring you years of enjoyment.

///M3 FTW...nissan is great and all, at least in the performance factor. however, saying that i paid over 70K for a NISSAN with a steering wheel and cockpit the size of an 18-wheeler is not something i am looking forward to, styling doesnt excite me

It was very clear from the very beginning that the GTR was going to compete with the 911TT. It does exactly that, and beats it fair and square. Thus, anyone thinking that the M3 was going to compete with the GTR must have been really naive/misinformed. It will be interesting to see Porsche's answer soon. They will most likely increase the power.

This post should be in the M3 vs. ... by the way.

What about your Corvette Z06 ? Isnt it a cheap car with a great performance?

Why buying a asian car if you can get a american one? I dont like the style of asian cars very much...

Much as I like the Z06 but comparing it to the GTR is like comparing Rambo's knife to a surgeon's scalpel. The Corvette may grip very well indeed but it's a blunt instrument in comparison.

AWD, and a backseat are the 2 reason why I'd choose the GT-R over the Z06

That and I think the GT-R will be easier to drive fast.

Well, here's the thing I picked up from reading a nissan forum. Someone is saying that nissan has integrated a speed limiter (111 mph) based on a gps system...and the only way to disable the limiter is to go to a nissan approved track, which the gps will recognize. He went on to say that after going to the track, you are then required to get you gtr into a nissan approved shop for a complete inspection....that costs ~$1000.

Again, I'm not sure how much of this is true, but if it is....it would be a real pita.

In JAPAN only, the new transmission on GTR is the main concern.

Ahh...ya he didn't mention that in his thread....and I don't remember anyone picking up on it being a Japan thing either. I thought it was a bit weird to be putting all those restrictions on a US bound car.

It's strange but in this occasion it looks like we are getting the better deal instead of the US market. The M3 costs with DCT an estimated £53K and the GTR will only be £1K more, but for you guys the Nissan will be more than $20K dearer.

I wonder why BMWs are so much dearer this side of the water than they are in the US. Is it a case that to get the sales their have to be that much cheaper than their competitors, it doesn't figure to me.

I totally support the GTR, I think its going to re-define the word sports car. But for me to buy one I would have to modify it, I just cant keep anything stock and I dont want to get into the whole Import Tuner scene. I did with my first car a 95' Toyota Supra which by the time I was done with it had 623 RWHP. I just dont want to get into the magazines, show and all the stuff associated with Jap-Imports. Interests change.

I am not sure that I understand what you are saying. The GT-R will be about the same price as a DCT equipped M3 here. Oh, I just realized that you mean with the dealer mark ups, it will be more. MSRP is about the same. Some dealers are selling them at MSRP.
