  • The M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic is
indeed the first power transmission of its kind the world over conceived
and designed for engine speeds of up to 9,000 rpm.
  • Like in motorsport: dynamic torque peaks when shifting up,
    in-between gas when shifting down.
  • The M double-clutch transmission is the first transmission
of its kind able to handle engine speeds of up to 9,000 rpm. And at
the same time it is perfectly prepared for high engine torque and extra power
  • When it comes to driving dynamics, the seven-speed double-clutch
transmission offers an advantage over seven-speed SMG already boasting an
extremely fast gearshift by way of the change in gears now taking place
without the slightest interruption of power and torque. In practice, this means
even faster and more dynamic acceleration clearly measurable in seconds
    and metres.
  • Compared with a conventional automatic transmission, the M double-clutch
transmission allows greater fuel economy and cleaner emissions on exactly
the same engine with the same power. This is primarily attributable to the even
more direct connection between the engine and the M double-clutch transmission
as well as the general layout with seven gears. Quite simply, the
advantage is that the larger number of gears allows even finer increments
    between the individual gear ratios.
  • The other end of the gearshift range is Drivelogic stage D1 enabling the driver
to set off in second gear. In this case the clutch is particularly smooth and
soft, helping the driver to set off without problems on, say, slippery surfaces
    in winter.
  • In the automated mode the driver is able to influence the gearshift for example
by taking back the gas pedal slowly and determining himself when the
transmission shifts up. Conversely, by kicking down the gas pedal he is able
to quickly shift back to the best gear for optimum acceleration.
  • Manual mode with Launch Control for setting off like a racing car.

My favourite exert:

"To provide an even more sporting driving impression and to further improve
the carís acceleration, the M double-clutch increases torque and pulling
power to an even higher standard when shifting gears by means of the
appropriately configured Drivelogic programs. In conjunction with the small
increments between gears, these Drivelogic programs give the driver an even
more intense feeling of acceleration, sensing each gearshift as the starting
point for an even greater surge of power"

Finally unladen weight figures from BMW in road trim (DIN):

E92 6MT: 1580kg, 3480lbs
E92 M-DCT: 1600kg, 3524lbs (there is a typo on the doc as it is indicated at 1575kg)

Not bad at all for two reasons:
1. The unladen DIN weight for 6MT is below 3500lbs!
2. M-DCT only adds 44lbs!

Faster and gas friendlier... damn. BMW is not messing around with this transmission...

So this means that Road & Track could have scored a 3.9 sec 0-60 with M-DCT?

Check out the gear ratios. Not sure why the total reduction in 1st gear is lower for M-DCT?

Greater fuel economy and better emissions huh? I wonder if this will help make any difference in the gas guzzler tax over the 6MT (Probably not).

Thanks for the info! Now, my question is - does North America get launch control, and if so, will it be the Launch Control "Lite", a la the SMG in the e46 M3?

I probably is correct but than again anyone with internet access would be able to find out the info on an Audi DSG which is virtual idential in design and see that they also quote a 0.2s drop in acceleration time to 60mph and it too weighs roughly the same at 25Kgs.

The reality is that the gearbox will be slightly better than this.

Excellent, wow what a read. I'm so excited.

I prediced 40-50 lb and .28 seconds gains respectively. Again as much as 0-60 is bragging rights, and not really as important as 0-100, this means we will likely see a sub 4.0s 0-60 run and it likely means they nailed LC pretty well. But it does leave the big question will the US get the same LC as EU? I sure hope so.

Other comments - details I found particularly interesting:
  • Supports engine rpm of up to 9000! (where will the CSL fall?)
  • Shift times: The upshifts take "a few milliseconds" . This is consitent with VW DSG CLAIMS of 8 ms, but not consitent with more reasonable estimates of what DSG actually obtains (30 ms)
  • It does have different ratios and a drastically different final drive
  • It is a dry sump unit with 9 liters of fluid, wow, cool
  • BMW used substantial knowledge of SMG to develop DCT, again as I predicted. It probably amounts to a lot of software re-use
  • Progressive yellow to red shift lights and the ability to turn them off
  • Solid aluminum paddles - nice
  • Auto kick down to best gear for max accelration - fantastic for freeway cruising to "race" mode in an instant

My CarTest simulations are included below. I really thought they would use the same final drive but did not. My predictions of combined gear ratios were within 10% and acceleration numbers were almost dead on comparing the final sim based on known specs with my guesses on specs. Looks like the DCT will be a touch slower on absolute top speed. But faster all the way through 175. I have used the weight figures from the DCT press release. 1 is 6MT, 2 are my initial predictions (just updating the weight), 3 is sim with final specs.
