How long before engine is warm?

Hi guys,

recently read about a guy who reacted when his engine suddenly took longer than the usual 2-3 miles to get warmed up. He even suspected issues.

I travel close 8 miles to work, most of it 55mph high way i.e. easy and steady throttle, and just about get warmed up and the oil gauge to start work (maybe 6-isch). Winter or Summer doesn't matter much. Seems like quite a difference from this guy.

So while some claim the S65 warm up quick compared to their previous machines, I'd say it's the contrary in my case. Maybe I am too careful warming up.

Would be interesting to get some of you guys input on this.

PS. And by warm I mean oil temp meter coming close to middle. I don't measure any other way. Before it hits mid or a tad above I need to drive another fair distance.

It takes my M3 several miles, to get to 210 or thereabouts; no way it takes 8 miles, even in triple digits.

So with "several miles" you mean a lot less then mine 8 mate, not sure I follow...?

It takes mine about 20 minutes to be just under 210 degrees. I keep rpm's below 3,500 in this time frame.

Roughly 8 miles to work for me

Several meaning, more than 10, when she was my DD, it would not get to 210 in 10 miles, which is why I stopped DDing her.

A little off topic, but what are your thoughts on WOT on a cold engine, assuming you don't go above 3k rpm? Any danger here?

There is always the danger of increased wear when the engine is cold. Why not just wait until its warmed. Simple insurance.

That would require lugging the engine which is not advised.

Also, 2 to 3 miles to warm up? Nope. Takes me the full 6.9 miles to/from work to get the little clock to spin just at the end of my drive. Takes a lot of fun out of it because I baby it until the 210 mark and I never get there on a normal drive. Some days I go the extra long way just to get a few miles at the end where it's warmed up.

I like to pull up engine oil status on the iDrive and once an accurate reading measurement is shown, then drive hard

Takes me around 6 miles before an oil reading and warm up to just under 210. The supplemental manual also states that warm up takes about that long. 13 mile commute to work so half the drive becomes fun.

If I drive on "D" bar2 the engine takes a noticeably longer time to warm-up. I would say around close to 5+ miles. If I drove in manual bar5, it takes less than 3 miles to warm-up. Keep in mind I usually shift sub-4krpm before warm-up.

Takes my car 5 mins and 2 miles in the morning, as it's 60 degrees here and I park in a warm garage.

After work, takes me about 5 minutes and less miles as I park outside in 80 degree weather.

The outside temperature and type of driving affects warmup speeds. Warms up faster in city than highway driving.

N63/S63 takes longer also. My M3 wasn't bad at all. 5-6 miles is all it took.

It takes longer to warm up cause there is almost 10 qt of oil in it!

The N54 motor took over twice as long to come to temperature as the S65 to be honest, so I welcome the change =)
