Oil Cap Leak
Hi all,
i've had a bit of a oil leak for the last 4 months but it has gotten worst. In 2 days, my gauge went from full to half. I'm planning on going by the dealer tomorrow for a replacement. Can someone please post the Service Bulletin for the oil cap? ...or tell me where i can find it. My cover is looking like crap with the paint bubbling and coming off. It looks like the inner wall inside the cover is also peeling off. Should I be worried about the debris inside?? ![]() ![]() ![]()

It wasn't too bad of a problem before....most of the time it would hold and not leak.
I know the part number and i know what a healthy one looks like.....does anyone have the SB on this so I can show the dealer if they give me a hard time on the replacement.

Peeling is not a big deal, I've seen that on countless cars over the years.

Mine just started doing this, so I'm gonna have to get my dealer to replace it. Although, my leak is nowhere near as bad as yours. Hope it all works out, OP.

Thanks for all the feedback and help guys!
It looks like the new cap is also prone to leaking as well. For now, I bent the arms down on the cap until I find the rubber gasket material thick enough to seal it tight. I really don't like going to the dealer for anything ...so i'll probably fix this myself. As for the peeling,.....I don't think the dealer is going to make any effort to correct it. I don't know why BMW painted the inside of the cover? To insulate it from the heat? They had to know that it was going to peel eventually. I think I will DIY a cover painting project next time i change my plugs.

You can replace the oil filler cap until the cows come home. Until you fix that chip on the oil filler neck on the valve cover it will continue to leak. I had this happen on my 2011 M3. Took the car to the dealer for its oil change, after that I started getting seepage. Took it back to the dealer they replaced the oil filler cap, still leaked. I changed out to a new valve cover and the leak was gone.

I've never seen this peeling paint issue in my area. Could there be a correlation with the area you live? Salt air? Extreme heat?

Update:
Well, I went to BMW Seattle and they didn't give me a new cap. Even with a SB they claim that it wasn't free. They knew nothing about the paint peeling off inside the cover and didn't see to alarmed about it. Basically, I knew more than them. LOL...I even know the parts manager and GM too! Good news is the leak stopped by bending down the tabs on my existing cap for now. I didn't have any leaking today. Also, I got to test drive the new M4 ....hhhhmmmmmm

Flea7, i have the exact same problem with pain peeling off the oil cap seal resulting in uneven sealing..but mine is a result of mechanic's poor workmenship when replacing my plug and coil, using my engine valve cover as leverage , causing the crack/ peel
Shit happens, well, will try bending the Tab to have a tighter seal. thx for sharing |
