So there isn't a stock M3 around that is making this noise, it's only tuned ones? If that's the case, it has me interested.

umm, no.

the noise has been present for at least the last 1.5 years. i bought the car 1.5 months ago, previous owner had it for a year plus.

bpmtune went in 7 days ago.

try again.

I have always been against messing up with the ECU through third party ODB2 hackers. My car is stock and no noise whatsoever. You might not even be aware of things the BPM software does besides what he tells you or he thinks it does. I am not questionning his integrity, just that it's playing with fire.
Nobody knows their car better than BMW. Flipping bits in the software you might run the car in a problematic mode that was not tested by BMW (yes, OEM software can have bugs when you don't run the run of the mill normal stock code).

Any 3rd party software hackers better had make you sign a waiver or you can sue him for damages (parts and labor).

No.

My 6MT from 14k miles when stock, and then with tune as well.

My DCT with 25k miles stock.

Sorry man, but you are 100 % wrong !And you don't know what you are talking about !
Like you said...."specifically" ///M Power-Belgium !
So here is the man.............
And why are you wrong ? Because everything you said is pure BS !!!
Actualy it's soooooo simple ,my car has done this always "before" and "after" the BPM tune and thats for 100 % sure !!!And was on stock 230E software (2012)so before the BPM tune! And the clunk noise was on, all the time !
So "you" are 100 % wrong, the only thing that changed the volume in the clunk noise dates from my last oil change(last year) at my BMW/Dealer !
Why ?
They changed the oil to Edge and my clunk noise is less, not so loud than before !
Why ? I don't know.....maybe you know !?!?
In the begin i had no clunk noise because the car was daily driven, but the last couple of years she changed into a weekend queen and comes out the garage when there is no rain !
So i drive my car not enough and so i got the clunk noise, and when i drive her every day i have no clunk noise, when i drive a longer trip from about 200 miles the clunk noise is gone for at least 2-3 weeks ,and again i don't no why ? Do you ?
This thread and the videos is now at my BMW/Dealer and they try to find a match into the BMW Puma-databank,and sadly for the moment no match !But they look and search further !
And they know that my car was tuned by Mike ( BPM/Tuning) and they love it!
Yes my car was driven by a BMW///M tech and i was next to him,he said this is the best engine response of a S65 engine i ever driven !
He said also this S65 runs so smooth and flys through the rpm's and the sound was for him unbelievable ,actualy he heard it already in the start up of the car, also about the BPM DCT/software upgrade he said this made the car a lot faster and even for him...he had a smile on his face !
So personal i think....that you need to think twice before you are saying things that sound like BS !
Last time you said that Mike was a Internet gangster and he was hacking ECU files....c'mon man ?!?!
And playing with fire ? Are you serious ?Think you are missing the fire in your S65 and that from the BPM tune !
And i know how Mike develops his files and i can only have huge respect for it ,part of the sources are coming from the birth place of our cars ...it calls Germany with the latest and the best ! And i was even witness of it !C'mon man !
If you want prove of it....PM me ! I'm here.....i will explain you what Mike has done for me,no tuner on this forum has done this ever for a customer and i'm the only one !
I can prove that BPM/tune is better than stock! It calls evolution of software it stands never still !
The developed software started in 2006 so 8 years ago for sofware it's stone age !
Advice...please stop talking about people like Mike this man lives for our cars, you have never talked with him,you never saw him....well i did and more than ones, what mike knows about our car and S65 i think you never heard anything like this !
I have nothing agaist you man , but please stop the BS ! You know nothing about it and Mike !
And please PM me and i will tell you my story and the story about my friend Mike and BPM !After what he did for me i call him my friend because he is !
What this man did to my car no one would believe it ! And exactly thats why i'm always 100 % for him,and defend him !
PM me and i will tell you .........

Technically that is just a recording of the waveform, not a spectrum.

A spectrum analysis has the X axis in frequency, not time.

agreed.

i'm no expert at this audio stuff, but at least it was helpful in diagnosing when the noise starts.

about 0.5 secs AFTER ignition is made.

thanks for the input.

anyways to those reading all the way to page 3...

as of june 13th 2014, new check valves have been ordered. i expect them to come in quite quick as i'm right next door to the motherland and probably be installed by mid week next week.

if that doesnt work, we're going to do a push start on the car, and see if not using a starter helps. at the same time i will probably have them do a vanos test / vanos bleed using ista or whatever the latest version is.

btw, i decided to do the check valves first because of this post:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpos...&postcount=208

"noise that only occurs once after a cold start"... this is exactly what i am experiencing. start -> noise -> off right away -> start right away will only produce the noise during the first start. which is really pointing me towards oil bleeding out after the car sits for a while.

"OIL PRESSURE RAISES QUICKLY TO 90PSI AND DROPS TO 75PSI WHEN THE KNOCK NOISE HAPPENS THEN RETURNS TO 90PSI" is also relevant...

as can be seen by the image of the waveform, this fits right in with what i'm experiencing:

STARER SPIN -> IGNITION MADE (90PSI) -> 0.5secs later GRIND (75PSI) -> 0.5secs later GRIND STOP (90PSI)

So please keep posted, damn i'm curious and realy hope it's the fix for you !
Thanks in advance and wish you realy good luck, and my eyes i keep on this thread for sure !

I stand behind what i said on 3rd party ECU software hacking. It will always entail some significant risks. M-Power Belgium you're misleading my post, do not try to wrap up a questionable practice with the integrity of the man doing it. These are two completely separate things. I only commented on the former. A well meaning and business driven hacker is still doing hacking.

Figuring out how to crack the code of the ECU, the register map and all the table only gives the power to do damage when deviating from manufacturer approved and verified settings and variables. There is probably twenty key senior engineers at BMW M that would have to approve that a version of the ECU is safe for all subsystems and that's done by heavy computing tools simulations and 10-20 years experts know how (not in software hacking !) each in their mechanical/hydraulical/electrical field making calls. A 3rd party individual is absolutely playing with fire when experimenting with this outside the corporate BMW engineering framework.

Your idolatry of the person is off topic. If let a tuner shop mess with your ECU to gain more performance it entails reliability risk and that's understood.
It should be the first thing to question (as I have) if you have issues with the engine.

Ok then it's not the culprit this time but the reliability risks of third party tuning are a reality.

I'm sure you've seen my posts on here about this issue. I had the EXACT same issue. BMW replaced my VANOS gears about 30K miles ago and the sound has not returned.

I've gone through this and no one seems to want to believe me that this is not normal, BMW agrees that it's not normal, and it can be fixed.

It's not the starter or anything with the brakes lol!

oh believe me, i believe this is not normal.

i just think of it this way, with this noise, if i were to try and sell the car (which im NOT... just saying...) i would have a hard time.

im going to try the check valve route as someone on here said they had repaired 2 vehicles this way... the new check valves have arrived as of today.

i'm expecting them to be installed tomorrow.

will let everyone knows how it goes.

The frequency of the noise sounds the same as rod knock on startup, but it's a way different sound. Rod knock is usually a sharp clacking sound, and much quieter than this. This sounds more like a rattle, but the telling part is the frequency. It seems to coincide tightly with engine RPM, which would lead me in the direction of some reciprocating assembly (valvetrain, etc).

Good luck!

I saw someone above hinting that it's only tuned cars with this issue. My car was not tuned until after it was fixed.

Replaced check valves on my 08 motor and it changed the sound of the noise slightly, but still did it.

They all do it, especially when sitting for awhile. It's more prominent when parked on a hill too. I've heard it on a bone stock 2013 with under 3k on the clock.

Stating that this is tune related is off rhythm by quite a few beats. But some people like to be ridiculous.

I think an interesting point made earlier is about the lights.. Now that I think about it, every time my car is started the lights fire on because I'm in a garage. Just for kicks, in going to start the car with the switch to the off position. I'll be damned if it doesn't make the noise.... I can't imagine that being related, but will report back. If anything i would think that it may be related to voltage drop as the xenons fire and the starter disengages. Nice catch anon m3!

I'm also going to throw a battery tender on there to ensure the voltage is up there, as my battery probably isn't the strongest at this point.
