Alain Prost tests the new M3 .

Posted by a friend "Nicola Spiazzola" on an Italian Forum.
I only translated...

The Italian magazine Quattroruote, tested many different cars with about 400 cv, and with the help of the "professor", Alain Prost, that writes for this magazine, arrived to some interesting results...
Alan Prost (the tester) says:
It is a great pleasure to drive this M3. Bmw made a big step in front in the engine area and in the chassis.
I made practically the same lap times ,both with the electronic controls activated, or not activated.This means that the cars is very well balanced.
At every lap time, you would like to push more and more to see and and try to find where you can arrive with this car. This situation is inviting, I like the car.
And if I think that I can drive this car with four people and with the baggage....:-) very big result.
This was told exctly by ALAIN PROST.

About the lap times :

"Vairano" track is a slow track. The average speed is only 113km/h The top speed is only 176 km/h. Not really the best for the new M3. This track is substancially slow and similar to a mountain road.
Ths new M3 fighted second by second with the Porsche 911 4S and was really in the same final result.The M lost only against the R8 that had more performing tires...the new P zero Hero.
The Porsche 911 4s wins by 0,5 sec after 4km of race on this track (23 meters). But this car is lighter like you know, she has 4wheels drive,like the R8 (and in a slow track this helps a lot) and has a rear
305-30-19 tires.
The best lateral accelleration was 1,08 for the M3. The last e46 had a 1,03 .

Lap times on this track (compared also with past M3 and cars):

M3E46: 1'23"190; lateral accelleration 1,03g
M3 Csl: 1'20"488 but less heavier by 140kg of E46 and 170kg less than the m3 E92 (lateral G-force 1,15g. CUP tires on this car)
Ferrari 360CS 1'21"019
M3 E46 with wheels of 19" e smgII 1'22"599

M3 E92: 1'20"910 with PS2 tires

m3 e46 1670
csl 1530
M3 e92 1704.
4S 1.600 kg
R8 1.706 kg

all weights includes:
70 kg pilot
30 kg instruments for the tests

Some considerations on the accelleration numbers:

R8 1,66";
M3 2,05";
4S 1,6" ;

It is evident that 4wheels perfom better than rear traction on this first phase of the game

R8 4,59";
M3 4,81";
4S 4,58";

In this area the difference is still similar..

0-220 km-h
R8 20,31"
M3 21.05"
4S 20,96"

M3 is faster in the turn over the 140 km-h. The average of this superiority over the R8 and 4S is 3 km/h
In the turns below the 70 km/h the M3 losts an average of 2km-h over the R8 and 5 km-h over the 4S
The R8 is the only one equipped with semi slick tires.

So one personal question...What would be happened if this M would have been equipped with CUP tires?

Prost says that on this track (not so fast) the brakes were very good.
The scores that Prost has given to the cars shows that M3 has better number (scores) regarding the engine against the Porsche, the disbursement
of the power and the steering!!!!About the power and capacity to deliver it the M3 has like the R8 45 points on 50 (45/50) and Porsche has
47/50. Gear : M3 and Porsche 25/30 and R8 27/30.
In the section performance M3 wins over Porsche with 178/200 over 1717200. But in this section M3 loose 10 points only on the traction. If the traction
would be the same (4wheels) the true distance in this section would be 188/200 over 171/200

For those who don't know who Alain Prost is, he's one of the best drivers ever in F1.
