Thumbs up H&R releases suspension (springs / coilovers) for M3 coupe (pics)

The spellbinding steering precision right from the factory can be improved a few shades more by the 25-millimetre lower suspension setting at the front axle and 15-millimetre lower suspension at the rear. The H&R development team has also taken care to ensure that the spring kit harmonises perfectly with the adjustable dampers, an optional extra, so you can be sure of a comfortable ride, even with the sporty setup. Better traction also facilitates higher cornering speeds – even on hairpin bends and when changing direction quickly.

The lower suspension gives the car a wider look, even making it seem a touch more masculine. The wheel spacers, which can be combined with the series and aftermarket rims, take care of the rest, putting the icing on the cake of this chassis package. H&R-Spezialfedern isn’t neglecting those who like to race for fun or glory either. Coilovers and additional stabilisers will soon be available to make the V8 M3 once again the king of all racetracks in its category in the future. The M3 legend lives on - with the perfect extras from H&R.

Makes you think if they mate well or not. EDC and new springs. I've been wondering this for the longest time. If you go aftermarket suspension should you skip EDC?

I'm confused. Shown are both springs and dampers in the coilover setup. Are the springs alone designed to work with the EDC dampers that are retained or are they implying the entire system will work with the M-Drive's EDC controls? Meaning, swap out the EDC dampers with special H&R dampers that can somehow be rigged so that the damping can be adjusted by the car's electronics as it does the original EDC dampers that are to be replaced.

Just trying to shed some more light on whether to order my M3 with or without EDC. Loved the EDC's ability to go from comfy to firm in my M5. Made it great for city driving while switching to firm made it feel very competent at the track.

EDC is compatible with all springs. Some spring vendors may "certify" them as EDC ready but that is really not an issue.

I highly doubt that aftermarket companies (certainly not for some time) will release their own version of an EDC shock. EDC is a diverse and integrated system that ties into the larger DSC system. Unless BMW released a detailed guide on their specs (electronics, communications, etc) folks won't be able to make such shocks.

The real question IMO is this. Since EDC is customizeable by software wouldn't it make a lot more sense to offer more tuning options by a PC interface or more detailed idrive interface?

EDC largely eliminates the need for an aftermarket suspension for the car. That is unless you only drive on the track in which case you would probably be able to squeeze out a bit more performance from a coil over set up.

Except for ride height, and the possibility that compressing the shock a bit w/ a lowering spring might hinder or prematurely wear out the EDC damper. What are your thoughts on the latter?

I was thinking the same thing. I would like to hear somebody with some experience on the issue expound upon the subject, as the car sure does look nice with the new springs.

I will be waiting for aftermarket suspension manufacturers to come out with full coilover kits that allow for the use of EDC vs. going w/ just springs. Historically with BMWs, you're looking at 10k miles out of your stock shocks/dampers with springs-only before they are shot.
