Motul Multi DCTF

I just discovered that Motul is now making a dual-clutch transmission fluid that is compatible with BMW's DCTs.

"Especially suitable for Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) supplied by ZF, Getrag, or Borg Warner and used by the main car manufacturers: VW Audi Seat Skoda (DSG or S tronic), BMW (DKG), Mercedes Benz (7G DCT), Porsche (PDK), Ford (Powershift), Opel (DSG), PSA Peugeot-Citroen (DCS), Renault (EDC, DC4), Nissan (GR6)."

They list it as meeting BMW specs DCTF-1 (part number 83 220 440 214) and MTF-LT-5 (part number 83 220 2167 666). They also show it as being equivalent to Pentosin FFL-2, FFL-3, and FFL-4, along with Shell TF DCT-F3 which we know is the factory-fill in the Ferraris that use the higher-output version of our transmission.

KV @ 40 C = 33.8
KV @ 100 C = 7.3
Viscosity index = 189
Flash = 196 C / 385 F
Pour = -45 C / -49 F

This stuff looks very interesting, especially since it can be had for $20/qt or less. The viscosity index is also some 12% higher than the OEM FFL-4 fluid, meaning it should perform better across the entire temperature range. I haven't talked to Joey at Motul USA about this yet, but it's on my to-do list for this week.

Finally got through to Joey @ Motul USA this morning to ask about this fluid. For those who don't know, Joey is an awesome tech/product support guy. I've talked to him several times over the years about a bunch of other products and applications.

He said that it is of course designed to be a service fluid but it was targeted at race use as well. They got a lot of feedback from GT-R guys and other folks who track their cars. Supposedly this fluid resolves a lot of issues with the Nissan factory-fill overheating and breaking down under extreme use; around town he's not sure there is a significant difference.

Given the price of <$20/qt shipped it's a solid buy.

Yeah, it's been in my car for a few weeks now. Seems to work just fine. The car goes into gear a bit quicker when it's very cold now -- not sure if that's just because it's new fluid, or if the higher viscosity index helps.

Contact Chris at XTR Performance if you want to order it and let him know I referred you.
